Driving in Ireland for Americans can be a vacation buzzkill, literally. With the pub culture Americans are usually surprised to learn the drinking and driving limits are stricter in Ireland and with hefty penalties. In addition to driving on the other side, Irish roads are often one lane for two way traffic, car parks are exceedingly narrow, and you’ll likely share the road with a massive tractor. Perhaps Rick Steeves is to blame, but there seems to be a bit of pride in American travels to DIY all aspects of their trip. But let me tell you, there’s no shame in hiring a driver or taking a guided tour. Yes, we drove- a huge distance- but my husband is Irish and has driven these conditions before, and even he deserved a pint after a long drive. The Americans in front of us at the Cliffs of Mohr didn’t fare as well with the rear view mirror of their rental car missing and only wires left. 😳🚙
