Mexican Rebel Flag~ 1817, French privateer Luis Aury pulled off a daring takeover of Amelia Island-with just 55 men! Armed with ambition, Aury seized control from Gregor MacGregor and raised the Mexican rebel flag, claiming the island in the name of Mexico’a revolution.

His rule didn’t last long, but it’s one of the many wild stories from Amelia Island’s history.

Green Cross of Florida~ 1817. In 1817, a brief chapter in Amelia Island’s history unfolded when a group of adventurers, led by Scotsman Gregor MacGregor, tried to create the “Republic of the Floridas.” For a few months, their flag, the Green Cross of Florida, flew over the island before their plan ultimately fell apart.

Patriots of Amelia Island~ 1812 – 1813
In 1812, a group of American settlers, dubbed the “Patriots of Amelia Island,” took control of the island in a bold attempt to break free from Spanish rule. On March 17, they raised the Patriot flag, declaring Florida an independent state, only to replace it with the U.S. flag the following day. But their rebellion was brief, as the Spanish quickly regained control of the island.
