In 2017, after having two children basically back to back, I needed a reminder that motherhood wouldn’t change me.
I traveled to Peru with a wonderful organization called Beauty Has a Direction to volunteer with Peruvian Hearts, an educational empowerment program for young women.
Leaving behind my one and two-year-old was not easy, but deep down I knew I was being called to do this, to stay connected to my purpose on Earth no matter how unconventional it seemed to those around me.
That trip showed me the power of travel to transform not just the traveler, but entire communities. It proved to me, once again, that the most meaningful journeys aren’t about checking destinations off a bucket list (although that’s a great perk!) they’re about building relationships, listening, serving, and returning home forever changed. Something I first experienced during my many trips to Dominican Republic as a volunteer between 2009-2011 and eventually as an member in 2013.
I’m inspired to build experiences where travel becomes a bridge to culture, connection, and impact.
Looking back, I can see that Peru wasn’t the destination—it was the continuation of a very long journey of self-discovery.
Never underestimate what can happen when you say yes to something that stretches you. One step at a time, we uncover who we are meant to be. We just have to keep walking forward.
