HRM at NAU

HRM at NAU The official School of Hotel and Restaurant Management page for all things HRM at Northern Arizona University. NAU-The W. A.

For more than 100 years, Northern Arizona University has served as the state's premier residential university. NAU faculty, students, and alumni have been an integral part of Arizona’s economic and intellectual vitality. Franke College of Business' School of Hotel and Restaurant Management (SHRM) is recognized internationally as a leading provider of student-focused hospitality education. We have

accomplished this by creating an environment that prepares students to make immediate and ongoing contributions in the hospitality industry. We maintain an innovative curriculum responsive to changes in the industry, along with strong ties to our industry partners through which students gain access to internships and other experiential learning opportunities, faculty remain actively engaged in the hospitality industry, and employers recruit our graduates. The high level of faculty-student interaction and team based classroom experiences result in well trained hospitality professionals, with classroom learning augmented by a strong internship program and the requirement that students complete 1,200 hours of professional training in a hospitality business prior to graduation.

📸 Throwback Thursday! 📸

Travel back to 1979, when Eugene M. Hughes read the Arizona Daily Sun announcing that he would become the next president of Northern Arizona University.

Who was Eugene M. Hughes? He served as NAU's president from 1979 to 1990 and is the namesake of our Eugene M. Hughes Building, home to our School of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

There’s something powerful about closing a chapter not in a classroom; but in the field, where leadership actually lives.

This week, our HA 490C seniors had the privilege of stepping inside the exceptional operation at for one final experiential learning moment before graduation. What better setting to reflect on leadership than an environment where excellence, service, and culture are executed at the highest level every single day?

Our students didn’t just observe: they engaged. They asked questions, challenged ideas, and connected the dots between everything we’ve covered this semester: leadership, operations, culture, accountability, and the responsibility that comes with wearing the title of “leader.”

A sincere thank you to Doug Sutter, Kurt Martin, Tanner McNeese, and Tahlia Murray for investing your time, sharing your insights, and being transparent about what it really takes to lead in today’s hospitality industry. These moments matter more than you know: they shape perspective, confidence, and future decision-making.

Experiential learning is where transformation happens. It bridges theory and practice. It turns concepts into conviction. And most importantly, it prepares students not just to enter the industry, but to elevate it.

To our seniors: you’re ready. Go lead with integrity, serve with purpose, and raise the standards wherever you go. The industry needs you!

Final call! 👔✨

The Professional Closet’s last day open for the semester is tomorrow!

Stop by before we close up to grab anything you may need. After tomorrow, we’ll be doing a deep clean and taking inventory as we get everything ready for the fall semester.

Another HUGE “Thank you!” to and for hosting Professor Hattab’s HA 382 Mixology class! 🍸👏

A special shoutout to .flg.somm and the incredible teams for taking time to educate our future hospitality leaders on what it really takes to become a business owner, entrepreneur, and stay innovative in today’s fast-moving hospitality industry. From creativity behind the bar to leadership behind the scenes, our students gained real-world insight that simply cannot be taught from a textbook.

Experiential learning creates impact, builds confidence, and connects the next generation of leaders with those already raising the standard. 💡🔥

🏨✨ From Classroom to Career at Little America Hotel ✨🎓

Yesterday our graduating seniors had the opportunity to connect with the outstanding leadership team at one of Northern Arizona’s most respected hospitality destinations,

This was more than a tour. It was a real-world glimpse into life after college.

Students gained insight into leadership, hotel operations, guest experience excellence, and what it truly takes to build a successful career in hospitality. The lessons shared today cannot be taught from a textbook alone.

Experiential learning matters. Conversations with industry leaders matter. Creating pathways from university to career matters.

A huge thank you to the team for investing in the next generation of hospitality professionals. The future is bright. 🌟
