Dear Community Members,
We are reaching out with some disappointing news regarding the Flatwoods City Pool. Due to critical infrastructure and maintenance issues that require immediate attention we will not be opening the pool for the summer season.
During this year’s inspection, it was determined that the following issues must be addressed to ensure the safety of our patrons and to comply with health regulations:
• Structural integrity of the long wall in the large pool.
• Structural cracks in the long wall in the large pool.
• Voids under the decking around all three pools, specifically
along the long wall of the large pool.
• Plumbing concerns along the long wall of the large pool.
It was discovered the long wall of the large pool had several new cracks after the hard freeze during this past winter, which rendered the pool unusable. Over the past 50 years, this facility has served our community well, but the current structural issues are severe enough that a quick patch-up is not possible.
Pools this size usually require complete renovation once they reach around 25-30 years old. It’s a testament to the quality of maintenance and care given by the public works department over the years to keep this pool operational for an estimated 50 years without a complete renovation.
You may ask, “Why can’t we simply fill the cracks and voids?”
The answer is, due to the age of the pool, many state requirements for modern codes and standards do not have to be met and the pool received a grandfather status which means we were not required to meet modern codes and regulations for public pools.
However, with the repairs that must be made to ensure the integrity of the pool we will be required to bring the pool to the current state codes and standards for a public pool. The cost to bring the pool to current codes and standards raises the repairs and renovation cost astronomically. Along with the increased cost comes the lack of the quick availability of a qualified commercial large pool contractor. Early estimated cost to renovate the pool is over one million dollars.
We know how important the pool is to our community during hot summer months. We are currently collaborating with contractors to determine the full scope of repairs needed as we must prioritize the long-term structural integrity and safety of the site.
While we will not have the pool open this summer, we are committed to keeping you updated on the repair process and are working diligently to secure opening in 2027.
We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work to bring the pool back to its best shape. Listed below are other summer aquatic type venues in our area where you can visit for this summer.
