⚡👻 : The Strange Story of Mason Lee 👻⚡

More than 200 years ago, a bolt of lightning reportedly struck Mason Lee — and according to local history, his life was never the same.

Born in 1770, Lee lived an ordinary life until the lightning strike at age 30. Afterward, stories describe him as deeply eccentric, fearful of witches and demons, and convinced supernatural forces were behind his misfortunes.

He later settled in Marlboro County, where he became a prosperous landowner while living in bizarre conditions. His home reportedly had no doors or windows, and he entered through a trap door in the roof. He slept in a hollowed-out gum log, wore handmade clothing, shaved his head to keep witches from grabbing his hair, and made wooden swords to fight off demons. 🪵🗡️

Lee’s story took another strange turn after his death in 1821, when his will became a landmark South Carolina case about mental capacity and inheritance.

History, mystery, folklore, and a lightning strike that changed everything — Mason Lee’s tale remains one of Marlboro County’s strangest stories.

That legendary gum-log bed can still be seen today at the Marlboro County Museum in Bennettsville.

| Honoring Florence National Cemetery 🕊️❤️🤍💙🇺🇸

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember the brave men and women laid to rest at Florence National Cemetery. 🪦🇺🇸

Established in 1865 after the American Civil War, the cemetery grew from the trench graves of Union prisoners who died at the Florence Stockade. The first burials took place on Dr. James Jarrott’s plantation on September 17, 1864, and today this sacred ground continues to tell stories of sacrifice, service, and remembrance.

Among those honored here is Florena Budwin, believed to be the first female service member buried at the cemetery. Disguised as a man, she joined the Union Army alongside her husband before being captured and sent to the Florence Stockade. After serving as a nurse, she passed away in 1865 and now rests in Section D, Site 2480.

Also buried here is James Elliott Williams, a South Carolina native and one of the most highly decorated sailors in U.S. Navy history. A Medal of Honor recipient for his heroic actions in Vietnam, Williams is buried in Section F, Site 177.

Florence National Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and remains open for visitation during daylight hours each day.🪦🇺🇸

📍803 E. National Cemetery Rd., Florence, SC

Today, and every day, we honor their courage, their service, and their legacy. 🇺🇸🌿
