Part of the National Park Service’s National Heritage Areas program, MSNHA helps promote cultural tourism through education, preservation & conservation in the six northwest Alabama counties of the Tennessee River basin: Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone & Morgan. We focus on historic & natural stories as we inform, educate, develop & interpret visitor-ready sites to chronicle the

evolution of the area’s landscape, extending these opportunities to the largest audience possible. MSNHA’s three themes are music, Native American heritage & the Tennessee River.

MSNHA Director Terah Welch Klein represented Thursday evening at University of North Alabama's Big Deal, UNA's largest Mane Month event. Big Deal kicks off the semester by featuring campus organizations, departments & community vendors. It's packed with games, entertainment, giveaways, food & other activities to help students get acquainted with the Shoals & connected with campus. We loved sharing MSNHA's mission & projects with them!

Great job on identifying this week's photo. We showed you a pic of an old house and asked you to identify it. Everybody correctly guessed that you're standing on the porch of the Birthplace Cottage & looking at the main house at Helen Keller's Birthplace-Ivy Green, in Tuscumbia. Here's the whole story:

Built in 1820 only one year after Alabama became the 22nd state of the U.S., Ivy Green is a simple, white clapboard home design in typical Southern architecture. The main house is of Virginia cottage construction, with four large rooms on the first floor bisected by a wide hall. Each room boasts an individual fireplace. Upstairs are three rooms connected by a hall. Having survived untouched through the ravages of the Civil War, Ivy Green is maintained to the smallest detail in its original state.
Helen Keller’s birthplace cottage is situated east of the main house and consists of a large room with a lovely bay window and playroom. Originally, the small “annex” was an office for keeping the plantation’s books. When Capt. Arthur H. Keller brought his bride, Kate Adams (his second marriage), home to Ivy Green, the office was daintily re-furnished for them as a bridal suite. Later the cottage served as living quarters for Helen and her teacher, Anne Sullivan.

The TerrainHopper has been one of the best additions to our equipment list! It’s designed to assist with mobility - especially for those who can’t traverse the property for whatever reason. It lets them stay engaged while removing barriers that would otherwise keep them from participating.

Dianna and Kyle Chormanski came to our museum yesterday while visiting family in Alabama. Not only did Kyle’s grandfather, Leonard Chormanski, go to East Tech high school with Jesse Owens, but he was on the same track team as well! Mr. Chormanski showed us the photograph, and it just so happens that same picture is on display here at the Jesse Owens Museum. The connection to Jesse Owens that our visitors bring is invaluable to his legacy. If you have any connection to Jesse Owens and his legacy, please come by the museum. We’d love to hear your story!
