The Florence County, SC road beckoned as much for the pecan trees lining each side as for what looked like promising white columns nearly a quarter of a mile away. As I drew closer, the columns delivered on that promise.

The house, in fact, is often known as The Columns - given that name in 1902 by Jennie Robertson Rankin when she and her husband, Walter, purchased the house. Walter died an untimely death two years later, but Jennie remained there until 1959.

As for those columns, there are 22 of them encircling the house on three sides, constructed in 1857 by enslaved workers with bricks handmade on site. Ten years later, the Civil War gave the enslaved their freedom, but the house and the farm remained. Cotton and to***co continued to be raised by some of the former slaves and their families.

The original owner, WIlliam Rogers Johnson, died in 1893, and the house transitioned into the 20th century, continuing as a working farm throughout the time that it was owned by the Rankin family, but a more interesting line item on its resume was the role it played in the 1934 movie, "Carolina", starring Lionel Barrymore, Janet Gaynor, and a little girl named Shirley Temple.

Because of that movie, the house is also sometimes known as "Carolina Hall". Then again, when Rankin descendant, James Harwell, purchased the place in 1974, the name Rankin-Harwell House also began to apply, so take your pick.

The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and today remains one of South Carolina's finest examples of Greek Revival architecture.
