We are saddened to share that Indigo, our beloved hyacinth macaw, passed away on October 11 at age 20.

Following recent changes in his health, Indigo was receiving veterinary care and close monitoring from our animal care team. A necropsy is underway to help us better understand the cause of his passing.

Indigo was a cherished member of the Theater of the Sea family, helping guests discover the remarkable intelligence and unique personalities of parrots.

Despite his impressive size and powerful beak, those who knew him best affectionately described him as a big baby. He looked to his trusted trainers for reassurance and relied on those relationships to help him feel safe. He also had a particular love for ropes—a simple favorite that his caretakers will always remember.

He held a special place in the careers of many of our Animal Care Specialists. For those just starting out, he helped teach some of the most meaningful lessons in animal care: earning trust, practicing patience, understanding an animal’s individual personality, and recognizing the subtle ways they communicate. Their time with Indigo showed them how relationships develop through consistent care, understanding, and respect.

Those lessons stayed with his caretakers as they grew in their careers, shaping how they care for other animals today. Indigo leaves behind lasting memories and a meaningful influence on the people who worked with him. His presence is deeply missed by all who knew him.

Thank you for keeping Indigo’s caretakers, especially our parrot team, in your thoughts as we remember him. 💙

Join us to celebrate the life of one of Biscayne National Park's most influential historical figures: Sir Lancelot Jones.

In 2014, October 13th was officially designated “Lancelot Jones Day” by the State of Florida in honor of the life and influence Sir Lancelot Jones had on Biscayne National Park and South Florida. Join us to celebrate with guest speaker Antoinette Miller, a relative of Sir Lancelot Jones, who will be sharing stories and pictures of life living with Lancelot Jones.
