Travelers have been contacting me with concerns about passing through Customs and Immigration when returning to the U.S. from abroad. I was glad to be traveling recently so that I could experience travel personally in order to be a resource for my travel community.
While I did not experience any issues myself, I did witness increased scrutiny at the gate prior to my departure for the U.S. during my last leg in Istanbul. Security was tight to pass into the gate, two passport checks and random selection for a complete baggage check for some. Bags were completely unpacked and checked at a table in the boarding area. White U.S. nationals did not appear to be among the groups being more carefully scrutinized.
Passing through Customs and Immigration at Dulles International was very easy.

U.S. citizens traveling to the United Kingdom, including Northern Ireland, need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) starting January 8, 2025. This requirement applies to all parts of the UK, including Northern Ireland.
Who needs an ETA?
U.S. citizens traveling to the UK for tourism, business, or short visits
Anyone arriving into or traveling through the UK who does not need a visa
Provide biographic, biometric, and contact details
Answer a short set of questions on suitability and criminality
ETA validity
Valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner
You can travel to the UK as many times as you want while you have an ETA
