From a good friend of ours and fellow Veteran supporter:
Didja know??
Memorial Day was originally known as “Decoration Day,” created after the Civil War as a day to honor and decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags.
One of the earliest recorded Decoration Day observances was organized in 1865 by formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston, South Carolina. They gathered to properly bury and honor Union soldiers who had died in a Confederate prison camp a powerful act of remembrance, gratitude, and humanity.
This day was never intended to be a celebration or simply the start of summer. It is a solemn day of reflection for those who gave their lives in military service.
So enjoy the cookouts the friends and family and nice weather but instead of saying “Happy Memorial Day,” consider saying:
“Remembering and honoring our fallen heroes.”
