I am excited to share with our community that Chappelle Excursions has made the purchase of the iconic Jimbo Meador’s Delta boat. I know that I have shared a reel, and a few customers have already gotten to experience the Lower Mobile-Tensaw Delta riding upon this piece of local history.
Jimbo Meador has been a family friend since the time when ferries would bring folks from the Mobile side to the Eastern Shore to spend the summer. Jimbo has lived a life full of experiences. He really is just a common man who has been engulfed with a passion for the outdoors.
Some say, why is he famous? And I personally would have to say it’s because he has experienced the change in its fullest effect. He came up in Mobile, where he used to trap c***s for the fur trade at a very young age, and where he trapped, one day someone came along and marked a property marker and said, you can no longer trap here.
He hunted the Delta in a time when you could rent a rowboat for the day, and the skies of the Delta were littered with Mallards, Pintails, and Gadwalls, whereas today you are lucky to get on a few Gadwalls.
He fished and shrimped Mobile Bay when you could load the nets with shrimp in a very short time. Today, there are only a few shrimp boats that you will see out in Mobile Bay trying to continue a long history of tradition.
He fished bass, trout, brim, redfish, Tarpon in a bay that had clarity and did not just turn to a brown chocolate color just because an 8-knot wind blew for the day.
He lived on the Eastern Shore before there were paved roads, in a time when you could swim after a big rainstorm with no worries of checking the “water quality report.”
For me, he is famous because he reminds me of how it used to be, and he encourages us to remember so that we can continue to try to protect and preserve each one of our local ecosystems and habitats.
I am just so honored that Jimbo is excited for where we are with Chappelle Excursions and where we are going with it. He sees hope that our voices will continue to speak up and also share a love and a passion for nature.
