Here's a little more African American history concerning Folly Island since its Black history month. It's a story about the 55th Mass. regiment, one of 8 different black regiments to spend time on Folly Island during the War between the State's.The 55th Mass. arrived on Folly in August, 1863 along with the 1st North Carolina, another black regiment. "A colored brigade, 2000 strong, will be encamped on the north end of Folly Island for fatigue duty on Morris Island ". Both regiments were specifically sent to do heavy fatigue duty. Dispite their hard work, the 55th Mass regiment did not receive pay as expected. They were told they would receive the same pay as other units and refused to be paid less. The men went nearly a year without being paid. The lack of pay caused serious problems. In June, 1864 men began to refuse to fall in for fatigue duty. A private named Wallace Baker, a private from Kentucky, was found guilty of mutiny and was sentenced to be shot for slapping a white officer.
On June 18th, 1864, in front of all the men on the island the ex*****on took place."The victim sitting on his rough box of a coffin, his eyes bandaged, and his hands bound behind him, the open grave, the firing squad drawn up in a line. The signal was given, the simultaneous volley, and it was all over". Members of his own regiment served as the firing squad, and put four bullets through his head and one through the body. Then came the quiet command, "right face, forward march ". The historian of the 55th Mass. indicates that if the men were treated fairly the mutinous action would not of happened.

Here is one of best examples on Folly of an old beach cottage that were popular when the island was first developed. This particular cottage was built in 1925, on land purchased on E. Ashley Ave., at a price of a $1000. Oceanfront was two grand and next lots $1500 and $1000. The second picture is advertisement for a two room cottage built 360 sq foot. No kitchen, bathroom. And built at a cost of $580 back then. Alot of smaller cottages built on Folly had additions haphazardly added on over the years. Does anyone else have a house on Folly dating from the 1920s. Thanks George.

Okay I've been doing more history research behind the name "Coffin land" that refers to both Folly and Morris island as names used to call the respective islands. The Folly museum claims the name Coffin came from the Coffin family who owned property on Folly. The Coffin family migrated to SC from Boston in 1800 and built a plantation south of here called Coffin Point. But the Coffin family never owned property on Folly island. The first mention of Folly island called Coffin Land was in 1762, and later mentioned 1777, and 1839. Morris Island was also named Coffin Land as early as 1749
Both islands at different times called Coffin Land. There is no map that refers to Folly island as Coffin Island. That is what the locals refer to it as. I just generally tell people that it remains a mystery as to why Folly and Morris island were called that. History is like detective work and sometimes things just remains a mystery.

Happy Falltime! Halloween has its roots in old Celtic rituals which claim the spirit world opens up to the physical world on October 31st.,and large bonfires were lite for protection. I have found two ghost stories involving pirates here on Folly Beach. The first involves Blackbeard who spent 6 days blockading the Charleston harbor and presumably anchored his vessels ( he had six vessels with him and over 300 pirates and had been on a successful year of plundering ships) at Five Fathom hole, a popular and safe location to anchor ships that is located just off the east end of Folly island.
Some believe Blackbeard may have buried some valuables here on the island at the time. And the story surrounds the ghost of Blackbeard seen here on Folly Beach. Older locals have been passing the story down.
The other ghost story on Folly was actually first told in Deadwood, SD in 1903 at a reunion for Union soldiers. Francis Moore was an officer in the 62nd Ohio regiment, one of the first regiments to reach Folly island. He had two officers, Lt Hatcher and Lt. Yokum who were removing former slaves from Folly island to Hilton Head, SC. The officers came across an elderly woman named Jettie who lived in a slave cottage on the west side of the island who claimed to be 112 years old and had been on Folly for 50 years. She also told the soldiers about her former master, a Captain Watson who was involved in piracy and that he was drowned at sea along with his other men. Earlier the pirates had buried some chests of considerable value "between this here two big oak trees", she said. Jettie went on saying that after digging a hole deep enough the chests were placed in the ground and at the same time a large black slave was murdered and placed in the hole along side the valuables and filled in. The former 112 year old slave woman said how the spirit of that black man still guard the valuables even today still held in the ground and that no one is able to recover them. To be continued...
