Here's an old picture provided by an old timer of the old road coming to Folly on the left. The original road to Folly actually went from Peas island to Long island to little Oak Island to Oak island, before ending up on Folly Beach.
They advertised that it took 45 minutes from Broad St downtown to Folly Beach, but it could take two hours sometimes.

Here's an actual picture taken of the naval battle on April 7th, 1863, and the ironclad ships that the federal navy were using in an attempt to capture the city. The engagement only lasted a couple of hours and the Southern harbor forts fired over 2000 shots with a 20 percent hit ratio and the ironclads managed 154 shots. The Keokuk ironclad was struck 90 times in thirty minutes and sank off of Morris island the following morning. The southern side was able to reuse the guns inside the ironclad and also discovered a valuable signal code book that enabled the Confederates to be able to read all the union messages that were sent.

Here's an update, I had a great discussion of the topic of Coffin island and where the name originates. Yes we local historians can have a lively discussion about history without disrespecting some one's perspective. Here's a copy of a map of JI and Folly island, and thank you to the person who gave me the map. It dates from 1696 before Folly was given to William Rivers and named Folly island. This is a discovery since I have not found a map so old using the name, Coffin. But this old map will dispel the fact that the Coffin family of Beaufort were not associated with the island. The family didn't arrive in SC till the late 1700s. But one more clue, that I believe solves the mystery. Look closely at the map magnified and look at both folly and Morris island. There are distinct mounds scattered across the landscape on both islands. Maybe sand dunes, well look on the map carefully at Kiawah island and there are no sand dunes shown and I think its safe to assume Kiawah island had sand dunes. I think the island was not named for a family, but the dangerous place that area was.

A year before Ebenezer Coffin was born in 1762. Folly Island was referred to as Coffin land in someone's will. The timing is all wrong.
There's no way Folly Island was named after the Coffin family. Wikipedia got it wrong!

This map is from 1777, and the Coffin family was still living in Boston, Massachusetts.
