8/12/26 Wednesday:
With the heat and prolonged warm waters come jellyfish of all types for our region. This one caught by Captain Johnny Stevens with Sail Folly today behind Folly Beach is called the Sea Wasp a/k/a the four handed "Box Jelly" (Chiropsalmus quadrumanus) and is the most venomous one we have here. Although being stung by one can require hospitalization at times, they are smaller and considered less lethal than the ones found in tropical Indo-Pacific and northern Australia (Chironex fleckeri), which can cause death in minutes.
NOTE: I've been popped by these, Man 'o Wars and Sea Nettles over the years - these absolutely hurt more.
