Isla Contoy = untouched paradise. 🤍

This tiny, protected island north of Isla Mujeres allows only 200 visitors each day, helping it feel like your own private slice of the Caribbean.

Think soft white sand, crystal-clear water, sea turtles, and more than 150 species of tropical birds. It’s peaceful, quiet, beautifully undeveloped, and absolutely worth the boat ride!

Isla Contoy can only be visited as part of an authorized excursion, so advance planning is important. Most tours depart from the Cancún or Punta Sam area, with the boat ride typically taking around 45 to 60 minutes. If you’re staying in Cancún or Costa Mujeres, it’s an easy adventure.

Did you know there’s an entire route dedicated to exploring cenotes in the Mexican Caribbean?

La Ruta de los Cenotes stretches between Puerto Morelos and the inland community of Leona Vicario and is home to dozens of incredible cenotes hidden throughout the jungle. Some are open-air pools surrounded by lush greenery, while others are tucked inside caves filled with stalactites and crystal-clear water.

Cenotes were incredibly important to the ancient Maya, both as sources of fresh water and as sacred places with spiritual significance. Today, they offer visitors a completely different way to experience the natural beauty of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Depending on where you stop along the route, you can swim, snorkel, zipline, kayak or even explore underground cave systems. And because so many cenotes are located along the same stretch of road, it’s possible to visit more than one in a day.

🌿 Travel Tip: Cenotes are delicate ecosystems. Many ask visitors to shower before entering and avoid sunscreen, lotions and other products that can contaminate the water. Following each cenote’s rules helps protect these beautiful places for generations to come.

Nobody plans to get a headache, upset stomach, heartburn, a blister, or a case of the sniffles on vacation… but it happens!

One of our favorite packing tips is to bring a small travel medicine kit with the over-the-counter medications you already know and use at home.

Depending on where you’re traveling, familiar OTC medications can be surprisingly expensive at resorts, airports, cruise ports, and hotel gift shops. And sometimes the exact brand or medication you normally use simply isn’t available.

A few things we like to have on hand:

💊 Pain/fever reliever
💊 Allergy medication
💊 Antacid/heartburn medication
💊 Motion sickness medication
💊 Anti-diarrheal medication
💊 Constipation relief
💊 Cold/cough medication
🩹 Bandages and blister care
🧴 Antibiotic ointment
🌡️ A small thermometer
💧 Electrolyte packets

Money-saving tip: Check budget-friendly stores like Dollar Tree! You can often find small packages or travel-size versions of common OTC medications for much less than buying full-size packages. It’s an inexpensive way to build a little travel medicine kit without spending a fortune on things you hopefully won’t even need.

You don’t need to pack the entire medicine cabinet! A few doses of the basics can save you a trip to the resort shop, pharmacy, or doctor…and potentially save you quite a bit of money.

One important reminder: Just because a medication is available over the counter in the U.S. doesn’t automatically mean it’s legal to bring into every country. Prescription and OTC medication rules vary by destination, so check the requirements for where you’re traveling and keep medications in their original, labeled packaging whenever possible.

A little space in your suitcase can save a whole lot of hassle when you’re far from home. 🌴
