Greetings all.
It has been quite a spell since the last VHS post. This is the VHS 1973 CB750Four. The initial engine re-condition posed some challenges with damaged threads with one of the cylinder studs, getting a proper torque reading after assembly was finally achieved....

Greetings all!
Mike's 1970 CB500 Four is going home. The engine passed its break-in mileage goal of 100 miles. The oil is drained and the oil pan was removed to inspect the pan for any "interesting" bits of metal. Mike's fresh engine passed all inspection points. Dropping the pan (for engines with an oil pan) is in my opinion a must do to look for any debris that can impact the life of the engine. I also install a magnetic oil drain plug to catch the really fine particles that can remain suspended in the oil as it circulates.

Mike's CB500 four has completed 40 miles of the 100 mile break in process. Here a check of the carburetor synchronization is performed. some minor adjustments are made.

It's alive!
Today Mikes CB500 came to life. I do a bench break in of the piston rings in stages. This video was sent to Mike after I had done a one minute run. Additional heat cycles will be performed before going out on a test ride.

Good day all.
Update on Marks CB500. The new 1.0 oversize pistons arrived with rings that did not make the cut. Disappointing, however I found a NOS Honda set via ebay. After carefully staggering the rings the barrel was installed and then the cylinder head.

"Details"
To prepare Mike's cylinder head, first is to lap the valves to the valve seats. During the machining process, each valve is ground to fit in a specific position in the head. My machinist marks each valve with its proper location.
I then need to lap in each valve to its new seat. This process is what is going to seal the intake charge within the combustion chamber, so it needs to be spot on to have a healthy engine.
During the lapping process, I check the valve and the seat and look for a clean band of new material. I then test the valve to ensure it has a thorough seal. This involves placing the freshly lapped valve in its numbered spot, WITHOUT the valve spring installed. I then place very lite oil around the valve face and set the timer.
Each valve must hold back the oil for a minimum of six minutes......remember without the valve springs installed, if the valve does not pass this test more material is removed.
Once all valves have passed the test the final assembly can be completed.
