“What are you prepared to do?”
- Sean Connery, The Untouchables
Today, for someone turning age 65, the chance of needing some type of long-term care services in their remaining years is very high.
This might include help dressing or bathing. It might include skilled nursing care or more extensive help around the home.
Typically, parents expect that their adult children will take care of them.
Do they have a plan that describes who is going to help or how to pay for the care they may need?
As well, it's important to understand the meaning of “care”. It sometimes involves tasks we don’t want or prefer not to think about.
Who will help them to and from the toilet after a broken hip? Who will bathe them during recovery? What happens if they have cognitive impairment?
