So grateful to be a part of this amazing event in Amazonas, Peru as a guest of PROMPERU.
We were shown wonderful hospitality and some incredible places in the remote Chachapoyas region in the Andes. Chachapoyas sarcophagi:
Each sarcophagus is shaped like a tall, upright human figure, up to 2.5 meters (about 8 feet) high. They are constructed from clay, sticks, and grasses, with painted details in white, ochre, and red pigments. The heads are often oversized, sometimes topped with human skulls, and feature stylized faces with pronounced jawlines.

The sarcophagi are placed in rows on narrow ledges high up on vertical cliffs, making them extremely difficult to access. This strategic placement protected the mummies from looters and environmental damage, preserving them for centuries.
Each sarcophagus typically contained a single mummified individual, often a member of the elite or nobility. The bodies were mummified in a fetal position, wrapped in cloth, and accompanied by grave goods such as ceramics and personal items. The sarcophagi served both as tombs and as guardians watching over the valley below.

The Chachapoya placed great importance on honoring and protecting their dead, especially prominent individuals. The unique style of the sarcophagi and their inaccessible locations reflect both spiritual beliefs and practical concerns for safeguarding ancestors.

While Carajía is the most famous, similar sarcophagi have been found at other sites, such as El Tigre, where smaller sarcophagi (possibly for children) have been discovered, further illustrating the diversity and reach of this mortuary tradition.
These sarcophagi are considered some of the most remarkable and visually striking archaeological remnants of the Chachapoya culture, offering insight into their funerary customs, artistry, and worldview.

Chachapoyas Mummies were found in the Sarcophagus statues placed on ledges high in the Andes mountains. Edward Munch’s famous painting El Grito (you can see it in the Munch museum in Oslo)  was painted after one of the mummies found in this area and taken to Paris in the 1800s.

The mummies in the pictures were taken at the Lamud Museum, which we visited today.

Excited and grateful to be in Peru this week as a hosted guest of PROMPERU (promoting Peruvian export and tourism).
