A few Amtrak passengers made the most of their wait for the Southwest Chief by exploring the museums at the Historic Santa Fe Depot Complex!

Their visit took an unexpected turn when they found themselves behind bars at the North Lee County Historical Society’s Historic Iowa State Penitentiary Exhibit! 🔒

We love when great attractions and people get recognized. Congratulations to 1884 On The Bluff for “Best Dam Venue” in the 2026 Dammy Awards!

Not only is this a beautiful wedding venue, but Doug & JoDee have held numerous amazing events here.

The truth is, this one belongs to YOU. To everyone who voted, celebrated with us, recommended us, encouraged us, and found a little something to love about this old place on the river — thank you.

We're genuinely surprised, incredibly touched, and still shaking our heads.

We are excited to share that PAW Animal Shelter is having another Dog Day Afternoon Adventure!! This coming Sunday October 18th from 10 until 3pm come to the shelter and we will match you up with a friend for the day! Tell your friends, tell your family, share our post, just get the word out. The more people we see the more dogs get to have a day away from the shelter! See you Sunday!

History came to life in Fort Madison today!

What a GREAT group we had visiting Fort Madison today! We welcomed 45 fifth-grade students, 6 high school students, and teachers from the Columbus Community School District for a day of exploring the stories that make our community so special.

The students had a busy day discovering Fort Madison’s past, including:

Exterior Tour of Historic Iowa State Penitentiary Site — Learning about the history of Iowa’s former state prison and how government institutions developed as the state grew.

Old Fort Madison — Exploring our frontier history and learning about the Mississippi River, transportation, and early settlement.

Clarissa Wilson’s Grave — Visiting the daughter of Betsy Ross and learning about the importance of preserving local history and the stories behind historic landmarks.

North Lee County Historical Society Museums — Exploring the prison exhibit, Children’s Museum, and Transportation Museum to discover even more about our area’s fascinating past.

A BIG thank-you to our presenters, Bill Napier, and Karen Kester, for sharing their knowledge and helping bring history to life for these students!

We love seeing young people explore, ask questions, and discover that history isn’t just something in a textbook. Sometimes, it’s right here in their own backyard! ❤️
