I’ll be honest — having the World Cup here was never even on my radar. I don’t follow soccer, I don’t know the rules, and I couldn’t name half the teams if you paid me. So I wasn’t expecting to feel anything about this event at all.

But then my feed started filling up with something I didn’t expect:
pure joy from travelers all over the world who came here with low expectations… and are leaving with full hearts.

They arrived thinking America was angry, divided, rude, chaotic — the version their news outlets painted.
They expected hostility.
They expected coldness.
They expected the worst.

And instead, they walked straight into the America we actually live in.

The America that smiles at strangers.
The America that says “Welcome, honey” at the diner.
The America that hands you a to‑go cup just because.
The America that is big and bold and beautiful in a way you can’t understand until you’re standing in it.

Visitors are blown away by:

• Our warmth — the everyday kindness we barely notice anymore
• Our vastness — the kind that makes you feel small in the best way
• Our food — comforting, creative, and unapologetically American
• Our air conditioning everywhere — a tiny thing that feels like a kindness
• Our stadiums and cities — clean, organized, world‑class
• Our friendliness — the kind that makes people rethink everything they thought they knew

And the comments… they’re honestly beautiful:

“I thought Americans were mean. I was wrong.”
“This country is incredible.”
“I’ve never felt so welcomed.”
“The media lied to us.”

It’s like watching the world rediscover something we sometimes forget:
America is extraordinary.
Not perfect — but extraordinary.
A place of generosity, optimism, and heart.

And the people who had the vision to bring the World Cup here — the United Bid Committee who fought for it, who believed the world needed to see America with their own eyes — that was genius.

Not political genius.
Patriotic genius.

Because this World Cup didn’t just bring the world to America.
It reminded the world who we are.
A nation of open doors, open hearts, and open skies.
A nation that welcomes.
A nation that surprises.
A nation that still inspires.

And for someone like me — someone who didn’t even follow soccer — seeing the world fall in love with our country has been one of the most unexpectedly beautiful parts of this whole thing.

Our next Garden Class: Shade Gardening is offered on Saturday, April 25, 10 a.m. to noon!

In the tropics, there is a fascinating selection of herbaceous plants and shrubs that actually prefer to grow in the shade. This program will cover adding color, highlighting specimens, and improving an existing shady corner with compatible plants. Shade gardens can produce spectacular flowers, fragrance, and stunning foliage. Following the classroom portion, we will tour several shady corners of the Estates for further discussion and questions.

Each participant will receive a complete set of the written course materials and a 20% discount coupon for plant purchases in our Garden Shoppe. Register online at Edisonford.org today! Walk-ins are welcome for this class!

Cost: Members: $45; Non-Members: $60
