🕷️ Looks like Spider-Man came prepared for marine science!

We found a juvenile horseshoe crab on our Backwater Discovery Field Trip and when I asked the kids which animal horseshoe crabs were closest relatives-Zakiah nailed it: SPIDERS! The coolest part was look at what shirt he wearing 😂🕸️ His spidey senses were working!

Here’s the cool science: despite their name, horseshoe crabs are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than to true crabs! Their long tail isn’t a stinger—it helps them steer and flip themselves upright. 🤓

Just got back from a quick trip over to the Atlantic for a little shelling. 🌊🐚 There’s something so soothing about the waves roll in, then softly wash back out while you sink each step into the sand.

I dug and found a few beautiful treasure and now have to spend some time trying to get the sand out of my gair. Seriously? How can it get embedded that depely from wind blowing? 😂 Who feels like a quick getaway is just what your soul needs. 💙

This juvenile Lightning Whelk is a stunning example of the dark brown lightning pattern that gives these mollusks their namesake. Typically as they mature they lose the colors and become more of just a tan/beige color.

What a breathtaking sight—a fever of cownose rays gliding through the water together! 🌊🤎 It looked like a beautiful underwater dance, reminding us once again that God’s creativity is everywhere.

📖 “How many are Your works, Lord! In wisdom You made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures.” —Psalm 104:24

✨ Fun facts:

• Cownose rays get their name from the two rounded lobes on the front of their heads that resemble a cow’s nose.
• They use strong, plate-like teeth to crush clams, snails, crabs, and other shellfish.
• These graceful rays often migrate together in large groups called fevers—sometimes numbering in thousands.

What an unforgettable blessing to witness God’s creation moving so beautifully through the water! 🙌🏼

What a beautiful blessing at the end of today’s tour! Just when we thought our adventure was complete, a manatee swam right beneath the boat—giving our students an unforgettable, up-close encounter with one of God’s gentlest creatures. 🩵

Their excitement and wonder were absolutely priceless 🥰 Moments like this remind us that God’s Creation is full of beautiful surprises, and sometimes He saves the sweetest blessing for the very end.
