This is an important distinction for anyone bringing a dog to Okaloosa Island. Treasure by the Sea is dog-friendly for up to two qualifying dogs under 40 lbs, with no pet fee under the current property policy. But that does not mean dogs can join you on Okaloosa Island’s public Gulf beaches. Okaloosa County rules prohibit animals on those beaches except service animals. So if your dog is coming on vacation, plan their breaks, walks and care separately from your beach time instead of arriving at the sand and finding out the rule there. Pet-friendly travel gets easier when you know both the rental rules and the destination rules before leaving home.

Gulfarium's C.A.R.E.ing for Turtles returns next Wednesday, September 9 at 5 PM — an after-hours, behind-the-scenes look at real sea turtle rehabilitation, right here between Destin and Fort Walton Beach on the Emerald Coast.

For a three- or four-night Emerald Coast trip, we would rather choose two or three priorities and leave space around them. Maybe that means a beach morning, one major attraction, a favorite meal and an evening with no agenda at all. If saltwater fishing on the Emerald Coast has been on your list but you've never gotten around to it, September 5 is worth knowing about. It's Florida's license-free saltwater fishing day, which falls on the first Saturday in September every year.

Do you need a fishing license to saltwater fish on September 5? No. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission waives the recreational saltwater fishing license requirement that day for both residents and visitors, whether you're fishing from shore, a pier, or a boat. What the waiver does not touch: seasons, size limits, bag limits, and species-specific regulations. Those still apply exactly as they would on a licensed day.

Staying on Okaloosa Island tonight and already did the sunset walk or another restaurant? Gulfarium has an option most visitors never think to check: UNDERWATER, an after-hours yoga class held right inside the Living Sea Aquarium.

Does Gulfarium do anything at night? A few times a season, yes! doors open at 6:45 PM, class runs 7–8 PM, and you're moving through a slow flow with the tank's marine life as your backdrop instead of a mirror. It's open to ages 12+, own mat required.

Because it skips the kid-show format, it's a nice fit if you're a couple looking for a different kind of date night, traveling without little ones, or bringing teens who are past the ""watch the dolphin show"" stage. Not your typical aquarium visit.

One of the easiest ways to overcomplicate a first Emerald Coast trip is treating Destin, Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island like they are the same place. Treasure by the Sea is on Okaloosa Island, between Fort Walton Beach and Destin. That makes it practical to enjoy island beach time while choosing when you actually want to head toward Destin attractions. Our advice for first-timers: choose your home base first, then build the itinerary around it—not the other way around. And never assume everything is walkable simply because a listing says “near Destin.” Save this before planning your first Okaloosa Island vacation.
