Mackinac Grand Hotel - Bus 2, Day 1

🎶🎵Second verse, same as the first 🎶🎵

Bus 2 left Fort Wayne this morning and enjoyed bright sunshine all the way up to Alpena, MI! Our Elk experience and 5 course meal were pretty amazing. You need to quiz us all about elk - we are now experts!

One traveler said “I have never had a Land Cruise meal last so long!” - over 2.5 hours of slow intentional courses mixed in with great conversation, fun facts, wine tastings, fun food and laughter. You forget how enjoyable it is to have a slow meal in our hurried culture.

We go to bed full and happy and dreaming about Mackinac Island tomorrow!

Day 2 Mackinac Grand Hotel Bus 1

What a day — the kind that feels like a postcard from start to finish. After a breakfast crowned with ooey‑gooey cinnamon rolls at our riverfront Holiday Inn in Alpena, we set off along the sparkling shoreline of Lake Huron. The drive itself felt like a scenic gift, each curve revealing more blue water and quiet beauty and perhaps a deer or two maybe even 3. By midday we rolled into Mackinaw City, where lunch quickly turned into a delicious spree of fudge, homemade potato chips, coffee, and every cherry‑themed treat imaginable. Then came the moment we’d been waiting for — boarding the ferry and watching the mainland drift away as Mackinac Island came into view.
Horse‑drawn carriages whisked us to the Grand Hotel, and grand doesn’t even begin to cover it. We had several hours to wander, soak in the elegance, and simply enjoy being there before dressing in our best for dinner. And dinner… it was an experience all its own. Impeccable food, flawless service, and an atmosphere that made you feel genuinely valued — the kind of fine dining that reminds you why people once treated a night out as something special. As the day came to a close, gratitude settled in: for travel, for beauty, for shared moments, and for the wonders tucked into every corner of this country. Goodnight, Mackinac — what a gift you’ve been.

Day 1 Mackinac Grand Hotel Bus 1

What a day it was — the kind that feels full from the very first cup of coffee to the final goodnight. After a cozy continental breakfast of pastries, fruit, yogurt, and coffee, our black bus rolled north toward Michigan, chatter and laughter filling the miles. Alpena welcomed us in the late afternoon, and after a quick flush‑brush‑and‑fluff, we were off again, this time to Thunder Bay Resort. Horse‑drawn carriages carried us through quiet woods as we searched for elk, and when we finally spotted them — towering, majestic, racks covered in velvet — it made us smile. The trail led us to a warm cabin where a five‑course feast waited: shrimp cocktail, sweet Napa salad, buttery croissants, crown roast of pork, and more delights that made the whole room hum with happiness. With full bellies, tired cheeks from smiling, and a shared sense of “this is why we travel,” we returned to our hotel content, grateful, and already tucking away the memories made today.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day filled with gratitude.

Rhode Island and Boston: Day 7
Our final day on the bus tour began with a delicious breakfast at the DoubleTree Hotel. David once again impressed everyone with his made-to-order omelettes, while the hot coffee, fresh pastries, fruit and other breakfast favorites gave us the perfect start for the journey home.
As we traveled west, the fun continued with a final exam that quickly turned competitive. The race for valedictorian honors was incredibly close. After a brief lunch stop, we continued onward, making another stop at a rest area where we enjoyed some treats and a chance to stretch our legs. We all watched the movie Secretariat. This true story inspired all of us.
By evening, our tired but happy group arrived back to the Port of Fort Wayne. This brought our unforgettable journey to Rhode Island and Boston to an end. There were hugs, smiles, and heartfelt farewells as we said goodbye to new and old friends. This trip was truly enjoyable, and we all return home with great memories that will last for years to come.
Friends forever.

Rhode Island and Boston: Day 6
Our day began in Boston with a wonderful breakfast at the Marriott hotel. This is the perfect start to another great and memorable adventure together. Excited for the day ahead, we made our way to historic Fenway Park for a private 90 minute tour of the stadium. Walking through one of baseball's most iconic and oldest major league stadiums gave everyone a chance to soak in the history, legendary stories, and an unforgettable atmosphere that makes Fenway so special.
After our time at the ballpark, we left Boston and traveled to Palmer, Massachusetts, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Steaming Tender restaurant (great find Russ). The unique railroad setting and tasty food provided a relaxing and enjoyable break before we continued our journey.
The bus ride continued westward, featuring the usual mix of sightseeing, snacking, music, and power naps. In the early evening, we arrived at the DoubleTree Hotel in Syracuse, where we were greeted with the universal symbol of hospitality: warm chocolate chip cookies. Morale and enthusiasm immediately improved by 92%.
The evening wrapped up with light dinner, drinks, and lots of laughter. I realized that despite a full day of traveling, eating, walking, and more eating, the group somehow still had energy left to socialize. And then more eating. Another incredible day in the Land Cruise books-and thankfully nobody got left behind at Fenway.

Rhode Island and Boston: Day 5
Today's tour of Boston was overwhelming in the best possible way. Everywhere we turned, there was another historic landmark, another story from the American revolution, or another building that seemed to hold centuries of history. Somehow this tour made history feel real instead of something only found in textbooks. It was one of those days where there was almost too much to take in, and honestly, my words and my pictures hardly do it justice.

We began our day with a very good breakfast at the hotel. The bus ride into downtown Boston was a little bit challenging with a lot of traffic. The tour began with a visit to the beautiful Trinity Church before walking in some areas of the Freedom Trail. In the course of the morning, we saw many historic buildings and landmarks that reminded us of how we should have paid more attention in history class.
For lunch, we stopped at the popular and cultural Quincy Market, where travelers enjoyed classic local foods such as clam chowder and lobster rolls and some chose to just eat ice cream.
After lunch. We toured the historic Charlestown Navy Yard and boarded the legendary USS Constitution. The group also visited the famous Old North Church, which played a vital role during the American revolution.
For dinner, we dined at Chart House restaurant. The food more than exceeded our expectations. The evening concluded with a relaxing sunset Harbor Cruise. We once again saw many historic buildings, sailboats, and other ships in the harbor. As night fell, we enjoyed seeing the glowing Boston skyline bright and beautiful against the evening sky. Tomorrow we will visit Fenway Park, the famous stadium where the Boston Red Sox play. We cannot wait for another great day of adventure.

Rhode Island and Boston: Day 4
Today our day began with a delicious breakfast at the Newport Harbor Hotel where the coffee was strong, the food was plentiful, and everyone pretended they were going to eat " just a little. " That plan lasted about 5 minutes. After breakfast, we toured Cornelius Vanderbilt's famous summer cottage, The Breakers. Calling it a " cottage" gave everyone a good laugh since most of us agreed you could probably fit our entire neighborhoods inside it. We wandered through the house room after room wondering how many people it took just to dust the chandeliers. This grand mansion and its elegant rooms gave us a glimpse again into the luxury of the historic American Gilded Age.
Later, we traveled along the scenic coastline to enjoy views of the beach and visit the peaceful Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. The ocean breezes and natural beauty made for a memorable afternoon.
The next stop was the Newport playhouse, where we enjoyed a hearty buffet lunch followed by a lively and entertaining cabaret show. After lunch, the group gathered in the theater to watch The comedy production of America's Sexiest Couple, which brought plenty of laughter and fun to conclude our time in Newport.
In the late afternoon, we departed for Boston. Upon arriving at our Marriott Hotel, we enjoyed dinner before settling in for the evening. Some travelers spent some time playing cards, enjoying ice cream, and sharing conversations and memories from our wonderful day in Newport. Tomorrow we all look forward to touring historic Boston.

Newport, Rhode Island and Boston: Day 3

Our day in beautiful Newport was filled with breathtaking scenery, rich history, and wonderful food. After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the hotel, we met our outstanding tour guide, Betty, who led us through the charming streets of downtown Newport. Her stories and knowledge brought the city's colorful history to life as we admired the harbor views, and historic and elegant colonial buildings.
Later in the morning, we traveled along the spectacular coastline, where we viewed the famous Gilded Age Mansions and impressive celebrity homes. One of the highlights of the day was a tour of the magnificent Marble House. The grand Vanderbilt mansion is filled with marble, luxury, and fascinating history from America's gilded era.
In the afternoon, we boarded the Coastal Queen cruises for a relaxing boat ride around Newport harbor. Seeing the city from the water gave us an entirely different perspective of the beautiful shoreline, impressive yachts, and stunning waterfront estates.
Our memorable day concluded with a delicious plated dinner at the popular La Forge Casino restaurant. We were treated to a mouth-watering dessert that was the perfect ending to a truly unforgettable day in Newport. Tomorrow we continue to tour more of Newport and then head to Boston.

Rhode Island and Boston: Day 2
After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, our group boarded the bus and departed from Hazeldel, PA, beginning another exciting day of our tour. The scenic drive carried us through several beautiful states as we made our way toward the historic city of Newport, Rhode Island. Along the journey, we enjoyed a relaxing lunch stop in Darien Connecticut, where everyone had time to stretch, visit, and enjoy a good lunch before continuing on our adventure
By late afternoon we arrived at the beautiful Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina, where we were warmly welcomed with a delightful reception featuring drinks and delicious hors d'oeuvres. Following the reception, we gathered for a wonderful dinner highlighted by an especially tasty cheesecake that quickly became everyone's favorite dessert of the evening.
To conclude the day, we enjoyed a peaceful stroll along the famous Cliff Walk. As we walked beside the bay, we admired the natural beauty of Newport's stunning coastline and the magnificent mansions built during the Guilted Age. The combination of ocean views, historic architecture, and cool evening air created a memorable ending to a truly wonderful day.
