Day 2 of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands.

What a day exploring the beauty of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands!

Our travelers enjoyed a scenic drive with beautiful lush woods and vibrant lupines adding splashes of color to the landscape. After a quick, but fascinating visit to the Great Lakes Visitor Center, we set out to discover one of the most beautiful regions in the Midwest.

We were absolutely charmed by our Victorian lunch at the Rittenhouse. The historic setting, delicious meal, and warm hospitality made it a highlight of the day.

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore did not disappoint. As we traveled 48 miles across Lake Superior, we marveled at towering sandstone cliffs, historic lighthouses, and the famous sea caves of Devils Island. The stories of fishing villages, quarry workers, and lighthouse keepers helped bring the islands’ rich history to life. We were amazed by the sights, especially the beautiful and regal bald eagle who seemed to be posing for us.

We ended the evening in Duluth, checking into the beautiful Canal Park Lodge. As the sun began to set over Lake Superior, it was the perfect ending to a day filled with incredible scenery, fascinating history, great fellowship, and countless memories.

Another wonderful day to be on a Land Cruise!

Day 1: Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, 2026
We are always thankful for the Port of Fort Wayne, but rainy departures like today make us ever so grateful for a comfortable place to wait out of the elements. Soon, the rain stopped, the clouds thinned, and the sun came through.
We passed the time with all the usual: music, a get-smart movie about the Great Lakes, napped, got to know one another and had an afternoon Happy Hour. Plus, we did a Q&A with both Kristina and Lydia.
As we cruised through Wisconsin, Russ remarked that it was "really green, like Ireland green," which was accurate. The best quote of the day came from Kristina, who said during her Q&A that she grew up traveling with her family. They operated under the belief that "there is no ONE trip of a lifetime, only trips IN a lifetime." So here's to this one...may it be filled with beautiful sights, treasured memories and sweet friendships.

The Great Comeback Mystery Tour – Day 5

We enjoyed one last European-style breakfast at the hotel before loading up for our journey home. Thanks to our wonderful luggage handler volunteers, we were on the road in no time and treated to a beautiful morning of bright blue skies and the Smoky Mountains showing off how they earned their name.

As we traveled, we once again saw portions of I-40 and surrounding areas impacted by Hurricane Helene. The scenes served one last time as a powerful reminder of the devastation these communities experienced, but also of the determination, faith, and resilience of the people who continue the work of rebuilding.

The miles rolled by with smooth travels, good conversations, plenty of snacks, and the simple joy of spending time together. Before long, the final quiz gave way to something even more important—a lesson in the Unicorn Song! Land Cruise veterans know exactly what that means! This group sang with gusto. What fun!

As we arrived at the Port and exchanged our goodbyes, our hearts were full. This trip gave us the opportunity to see a beautiful part of the country, learn from the stories of the people who call it home, and make memories with friends old and new. The destinations are wonderful, but it’s the shared experiences and the people beside us that make these journeys so meaningful.

Thank you for being part of The Great Comeback. Until the next adventure!

Toledo Overnight - Day 2

We slept deeply after a fun day yesterday and woke up with Holiday Inn Express cinnamon rolls ready to start our day!!

Sunshine greeted us as we drove to the Maumee river overlooking downtown Toledo and picked up our step on guide, Donna, who drove us through downtown Toledo, introducing us to her city. There’s nothing like a step on guide to help you really get to know a place. Toledo has some beautiful old buildings and some wonder murals. They are known as frog city due to their historic placement between a swamp and a marsh.

Our next adventure was a trip to DWF flower wholesale warehouse, where Lee explained to us the process of getting flowers from Mexico and South America into the country through customs to these warehouses and then distributed to florists all over America. We saw a refrigerated room filled with colorful flowers ready to go, and our minds were expanded at the logistics of the flower industry.

We were able to watch a flower arranging demonstration, and our minds were blown when a hydrangea was used as the base of the arranging for the other flowers. We will all be using this trick in the future.

Our travels through small town Ohio continued into Whitehouse, Ohio where we had lunch at the White House Inn, the cutest log cabin with beautiful flowers outside. The perch platter was a favorite and there was cheesecake!

The final stop for our Toledo adventure was a trip to The Butterfly House. What a gem in small town Ohio. Every year they get cocoons and chrysalis from South America or Asia that they then hatch into a gorgeous greenhouse where the butterflies fly around snacking on fruit and charming visitors.

we were mesmerized by the different varieties and even saw some butterflies being hatched.

On our way out to the bus we were able to release some native species into the wild, what an experience.

We are very thankful to these passengers for being our guinea pigs on this first of hopefully many overnight Land Cruise adventures. In the short time we were together we laughed, wesang, we were wowed, and we all learned a little something!!

The Great Comeback Tour – Day 4!

What a day in Asheville!

Our Land Cruise travelers spent the day discovering the stories, history, and resilience that make this mountain city so special. From the grandeur of the Biltmore Estate, where George Vanderbilt’s vision transformed the region, to the historic Grove Park Inn with its massive granite boulders and timeless charm, there was no shortage of fascinating sights and stories.
Our local guide, Heath, did an excellent job making the rich history and stories come to life!

We enjoyed exploring the Folk Art Center and learning about the talented mountain craftsmen. Many treasures were found and happily coming home to Indiana with us. They are sure to bring us joy, reminding us of this meaningful trip together.

The most impactful part of the day came as we learned about Hurricane Helene’s devastating effects on the region. Seeing the recovery efforts firsthand and hearing personal stories from local residents gave us a deeper appreciation for the strength of this community. From neighborhoods still rebuilding to accounts of neighbors helping neighbors, we were reminded that “The Great Comeback” is more than the theme of our trip—it’s the story Asheville continues to live every day.

As always, our travelers asked great questions, shared plenty of laughs, and embraced every opportunity to learn. We’re grateful for another memorable, meaningful day together.

Toledo Overnight day one

Today a bus load of travelers headed to Toledo for a Land Cruise first, an overnight trip!

We love this opportunity to invite more people into our traveling family, allowing us to more deeply explore places and experiences close to Fort Wayne.

We had beautiful blue skies as we stepped off the bus into 1879 for a mule driven Canal boat ride on the Miami & Erie canal. Our crew of Canalsmen navigated us a mile up and back the through an original limestone and wood lock - making the combination of canal, replica boat, lock, and mule the only experience of its kind in America.

We were all enchanted by our trip to the past as we boarded the bus onward towards Toledo. Our next stop impressed us in a different way as we watched a glass blowing demonstration at the Toledo Museum of Art. Over the course of an hour we watched artists craft a beautiful vase, working with incredible heat and time constraints. Toledo is known as glass city so this was an appropriate stop.

Land Cruise loves to introduce its travelers to local chocolate, candy and of course ice cream, and short overnight trips are no exception. Maumee Valley Candy Company forced us to choose between taffy, buckeyes, one scoop or two, and caramels. What a fun stop.

The rain finally caught up to us at dinner but we didn’t let that dampen our spirits, because the main event after dinner was “A Beautiful Noise - the Neil Diamond Musical.” we have had travelers asking us to go see the show since it first opened, and it was our pleasure to get them in the door! For just a day of travel, the experiences full! We are looking forward to seeing what our day in the Toledo area will bring us tomorrow.
