If Alaska was one of those vacations your family is still talking about, the next question is usually:

Where do we go from here?

That is where thoughtful planning matters.

I am not just looking for another destination with mountains and glaciers. I am looking at what you actually loved about Alaska and using that to shape what comes next.

Was it the scenery? The wildlife? The time on the water? The slower pace? The feeling of being somewhere completely different from everyday life?

Your kids do not need a perfectly executed vacation.

They probably will not remember whether every reservation went exactly according to plan or whether you managed to fit every single thing onto the itinerary.

They will remember the stories.

The unexpected snack they loved. The attraction they begged to do twice. The afternoon everyone needed a break. The moment something they had only ever seen in a book or movie suddenly became real.

That is something I think about when I plan family vacations.

Not just what can fit into the itinerary, but what is actually worth your family’s time, where you need room to breathe, and which experiences have the potential to become the stories you are still telling years later.

Because a great family vacation is not about doing everything. It is about making the right things count.

Give a kid an actual job while traveling and suddenly they are locked in.

Find our gate. Watch for the right train. Figure out which direction we need to walk. Check the room number.

Things that would feel like a lesson at home become part of the adventure when you’re somewhere new.

And little by little, they’re learning how to pay attention, solve problems, navigate unfamiliar places, and trust themselves to figure things out.

One of my favorite parts of traveling with kids is watching them realize just how capable they are.

There’s still time to plan something meaningful before 2026 is over, whether that looks like a long weekend, a holiday trip, a cruise, or finally booking the vacation you keep talking about.

Some trips benefit from planning far ahead. Others can come together beautifully with the time you have now. The key is knowing what still makes sense for your dates, budget, and priorities.

Planning a big family vacation usually starts with the exciting part: where should we go?

But the part that makes the whole experience feel easier is knowing what needs attention, when it needs attention, and what can wait.

That’s the part I’m thinking about for my clients long before departure.

From narrowing down the right destination and itinerary to watching booking windows, managing the moving pieces, building in the right experiences, and making sure the final details actually line up, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes.

And for families especially, I’m not interested in cramming every possible thing into the schedule just because you traveled a long way to get there. I want the vacation to feel exciting, thoughtful, and realistic for the way your family actually travels.

Italy or Greece? 🇮🇹 🇬🇷

One gives you gelato in the piazza, rolling countryside and cities you could wander for days. The other gives you island hopping, whitewashed villages and those Aegean views that really are that good.

Both come with incredible food, thousands of years of history and more places worth seeing than you could possibly fit into one vacation.

Both make a pretty great backdrop for the kind of family memories you’ll still be talking about years from now.

Maybe not all of it.

They might forget the name of the cathedral. Or which little town you stopped in. Or exactly what you did that day.

But they’re learning that the world is bigger than the one they know.

Different foods. Different languages. Different people. Different ways of doing things.

And you’re creating shared memories that become part of your family’s story—the random moments that somehow come up at the dinner table years (and sometimes decades) later.

They may not remember every detail of the trip.

But they’ll remember pieces of it. You’ll remember pieces they don’t. And together, those stories become *your family stories.*
