"She Came Alive in the Mountains." Friends and Family Remember American Mountaineer Shelley Johannesen.

American mountaineer Shelley Johannesen, 53, had just stood on the summit of the world's fifth-highest peak. On the descent, a highly unusual wind slab avalanche swept her and her team down the mountain, marking a tragic and rare event for the 27,838-foot giant. Read more in the comments.

I am heartbroken to share that my beloved Shelley Johannesen passed away in the early morning hours on Nepal’s Mount Makalu on Monday 11 May.

She died in my arms high on the mountain due to injuries sustained from an avalanche at approximately 24,000 feet.

Shelley was not just an incredible person, but lived her life with no limits and chased her passions around the world.

I am still trying to understand this loss, any my heart goes out to her family at this time.
