Most people looking for a summer mountain escape are fighting for the same crowded spots.

But tucked near Lake Nantahala, there’s a new cabin rental that feels like one of those places you find once and immediately want to keep to yourself.

And right now, Wayah Ridge Escapes is starting summer with a pretty huge offer:

40% off your entire stay if you book a spontaneous trip now through June 14.

Wayah Ridge Escapes has four private, family-owned tiny cabins tucked into the Nantahala National Forest, just minutes from Lake Nantahala. It’s the kind of place made for people who want the mountains without overcomplicating the trip.

A quiet couple’s getaway.
A last-minute lake weekend.
A fishing trip with the guys.
A family reset before summer gets too busy.
Or honestly, just a place to breathe for a few days.

The cabins are modern and cozy, but still feel tucked away in the woods. You’re close to Lake Nantahala for boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming, and paddleboarding, and you’re also near Nantahala Gorge, the Nantahala Outdoor Center, Wayah Bald Lookout Tower, hiking trails, waterfalls, and some of the best outdoor adventure in Western North Carolina.

So you can spend the day rafting, ziplining, hiking, or chasing mountain views…

then come back to a quiet cabin in the forest where the whole point is to unplug, unwind, and reconnect.

If you’ve been saying you need a mountain trip but haven’t planned anything yet, this is your sign to be spontaneous.

Book by June 14 and get 40% off your entire stay.

That's what we do around here. When are you visiting?

If you ever see an elk this close in person.. we hope it's by accident, and we don't know what your next step would be.. maybe the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has suggestions? Do we run, back away slowly, stay still, cry? Otherwise we're glad the zoom and talent of Up N' Adam Adventures can capture the experience we hopefully never get to have in person!!!! Great photo! But we do love seeing them all over cherokee!

“What are you looking at?!?”

As we were adventuring yesterday, this young elk and his adventuring partner were seen on the road to Kuwohi Dome.

A bit of a rare site as they typically are found around the visitor center at Oconaluftee at the foot of the mountain on the North Carolina side. (check out our previously posted reel….

A lot of people hear “Buffalo Creek” and ask the same thing…

Wait, is there actually buffalo there?

And yes. There are.

But that’s only the first surprise.

Buffalo Creek Vacations in Clyde is one of those places that sounds like a cabin rental at first, then you realize it’s a whole mountain ranch getaway.

You can stay in a luxury cabin.

You can sleep in an actual renovated train caboose.

You can bring the dog.

You can wake up close to the Smokies, spend the day exploring Cataloochee, then come back to hot tubs, mountain views, private fire rings, a game room, a playground, and animals right there on the property.

And the cabooses?

They’re not just for looks.

They’re fully renovated stays with kitchens, bathrooms, decks, Wi-Fi, TVs, heat, air conditioning, and all the little comforts that make it feel like an actual vacation instead of a novelty overnight.

That’s what makes Buffalo Creek different.

The buffalo might be what gets people curious, but once you’re there, it’s the whole experience that makes it memorable.

The cabins.
The cabooses.
The ranch animals.
The train-themed fun.
The game room.
The pet-friendly setup.
The room for families, couples, reunions, field trips, and mountain weekends that don’t feel cookie-cutter.

And one of the best parts is how close you are to Cataloochee.

So if you’re hoping to see elk, take a scenic drive, explore historic mountain buildings, or just have that “we really got away” feeling, Buffalo Creek makes a pretty perfect home base.

It’s not just a place to sleep.

It’s a place where the stay becomes part of the story.

So yes, there are buffalo.

But there’s also a caboose you can sleep in, cabins for every kind of trip, ranch animals, family activities, and a whole lot more than people expect when they first hear the name.

Hey Explorers 👣

The Smokies are one of the most colorful places in America… and studies show colors found in nature, especially greens and blues, can help some people feel calmer and more relaxed. 🌲⛰️

What you’re seeing in this video is called an afterimage illusion. When your eyes stare at intense negative colors, the cone cells in your retina become fatigued, causing your brain to briefly create complementary colors that aren’t actually there.

Pretty wild, right? Almost as wild as chasing Sasquatch clues through the mountains… 👀

But did you stay for Carl’s clue at the end?

“This first hiding spot would take most to new heights… but not all. Are you afraid of heights?”- Carl the Sasquatch
Hiding in spot #1 from June 1st - June 15th

Fact: on some summer days, you could explore several Southern Smokies towns in the same amount of time it takes to make it around Cades Cove Loop.

And if you catch a Jeep parade? You might have time for the whole list, plus a stop into Mountain City, Georgia while you’re at it.

Bryson City. Cherokee. Sylva. Dillsboro. Waynesville. Maggie Valley. Franklin. Highlands. Robbinsville. Hayesville. Murphy.

That is the beauty of the North Carolina side of the Smokies. You can spend the day hopping between mountain towns, scenic drives, waterfalls, local shops, rivers, overlooks, and small-town stops that each have their own kind of summer magic.

One day. So many directions to choose from.

Save this for your next Southern Smokies road trip.
