Big news from the Freeport Historical Museum!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!

Beginning March 4th, 2025, The Freeport Historical Museum will offer FREE ADMISSION to all visitors!

Established in 2009 by the late WWll veteran Nat Hickey, the Freeport Historical Museum celebrated its grand reopening in 2024 after a three-year restructuring, rebranding, and redesign project led by Museum – Main Street Director Wade Dillon. The Freeport Historical Museum covers local and regional history through a narrative timeline and original artifacts. Bilingual interpretive panels and museum quality display cases guide visitors through hundreds of years of history beginning with Wilma, a 3,500-year-old skull found in Oyster Creek, to today’s leading industry leaders.

Museums are vital to the community as they serve as a central hub for sharing and preserving local history, providing educational opportunities to all ages through exhibits and programming, and boosts the local economy through heritage tourism. As it is the mission of the Freeport Historical Museum to be inclusive in our approach to history and community, offering free admission to all visitors opens the door to continued growth, opportunity, and understanding for years to come.

The award-winning Freeport Historical Museum is located in Historic Downtown Freeport at 311 East Park Avenue. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Closed most federal holidays.

Today, our Museum - Main Street Director Wade Dillon, Vice Chair Edith Fischer with the Brazosport Area Chamber of Commerce, and Loretta Cady - Programs Coordinator for the Freeport Historical Museum visited our friends with the Rockport Cultural Arts District - RCAD who are hosting the Smithsonian's Crossroads: Change in Rural America Exhibit - a Museums on Main Street traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian in partnership with the Texas Historical Commission.

Created in 1994, Museums on Main Street (MoMS) is a traveling exhibition program of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) division, which aims to engage small-town audiences and revitalize underserved rural communities.

In 2026, the Smithsonian and the Texas Historical Commission will release SPARK! Places of Innovation for which we intend to apply in the hopes to host this wonderful world class exhibition at the Freeport Historical Museum for the Freeport community to enjoy.

Happy for our friends with Royse City!

Like Royse City, Freeport is also a part of the Texas Main Street and Main Street America program as an affiliate. Seeing success stories like that of Royse gives us hope for historic downtown Freeport!

Click the link to watch a brief video on Royse City's success within the Texas Main Street Program.

Cities must pass a rigorous application process, meet performance benchmarks, and show long-term commitment to the Main Street Approach.
