Croatoan Island, as it was called in the 1500s, separates the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound. The small Native American Croatoan tribe lived there for hundreds of years. In the late 1500s, the famous legend of the Lost Colony of Roanoke likely wound up here.

📜🌊 OBX History: Frisco 🌊📜

Originally known as Trent by early English settlers, Frisco’s story reaches much further back to the Hatteras Native Americans 🏹. Parts of the island were once referred to as Indiantown, believed to mark the western edge of the tribe’s living area near the Buxton Woods Maritime Forest 🌳. At Brigand’s Bay (formerly King’s Point), archaeologists discovered a massive shell midden 🦪—stretching several football fields long—suggesting that thousands of Native Americans may have once called this island home.

A post office opened in 1898 under the name Trent, but was later renamed Frisco—likely to avoid confusion with Trenton on the mainland 📬.
