Yesterday’s late afternoon hike before the first freeze of the season….
This is in Fort Valley in the Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area…steeped in history and fish!!!
I am sure you didn’t expect that! It’s true! Passage Creek was just stocked with trout and the fishing bonanza is on!!!!!

In 1921, Appalachian Trail founder Benton MacKaye wrote an article in response to the pressures of industrialization, economic insecurity, and increasingly crowded cities. His answer wasn't to wait for those problems to disappear, but to imagine the Appalachian Mountains as a place where people could step away from the pressures of life and return with a new perspective.

In his proposal for the Appalachian Trail, he wrote, “Life for two weeks on the mountain top would show up many things about life during the other fifty weeks down below.”

105 years later, the world looks very different, but MacKaye’s question about how we spend our time still resonates. What might we see differently if we stepped away from the pressures of everyday life, even for a little while?

🚨 Heads up, Appalachian Trail hikers! 🚨 The National Hurricane Center has updated the predicted track of Hurricane Isaias, which is now expected to impact the A.T. in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Heavy rain, flash floods, and high winds are predicted along the Trail from Georgia through southwest Virginia, with possible heavy rain and flash flooding into central Virginia.

Hikers should consider postponing hikes along the southern part of the A.T. until after the storm. Hikers on the A.T. this weekend and immediately after the storm should be extremely careful to stay away from standing dead, diseased, or damaged trees. Dead and damaged trees can fall at any time and be deadly.
