Eckhart is an unincorporated community in Allegany County, Maryland, founded as a company town for the historic Eckhart Mines. The original Eckhart Mine, established in 1842, was the first commercial coal mine in the United States and the first railroad-shipping mine in America. Today, the community is a residential area with a rural feel, located near Frostburg, Md. History and significance The original Eckhart Mine holds historical significance as the first commercial coal mine in the United States, situated in the Georges Creek Valley coalfield. It was also the first mine in America to be located on a railway, opening in 1842 with the arrival of the B&O railroad. Initially, the community was a company town for the mine, owned by George Eckhardt, before becoming part of the Consolidation Coal Company. Modern community Eckhart Mines, located in Allegany County, Maryland, near Frostburg, has a population of approximately 521 residents. The community is characterized by its rural feel, with most residents renting their homes, and is a quiet residential area with a slower pace of life.
