The Mount Washington Auto Road is one of New Hampshire's most nerve-racking but beautiful drives. Along this 7.6-mile climb of a road, you gain over 4,600 feet in elevation on a narrow, twisting road to the 6,145-foot summit. Built in 1861, it’s the oldest man-made tourist attraction in the U.S. You’ll pass from dense forest into a stark alpine zone above tree line, with wind-bent evergreens, jagged rock, and views stretching over the clouds. Some stretches have no guardrails, just sharp drop-offs that keep your hands tight on the wheel. At the top, expect fierce winds, sudden weather changes, and unforgettable views of the mountains beyond.
