To protect wildlife and keep our beaches clean, the ‘Leave No Trace’ ordinance will be strictly enforced throughout spring break.

The Leave No Trace ordinance (No 19-017 Secs 8-27) prohibits leaving any items, such as umbrellas or lawn chairs, on the beachfront after sunset. More than 120 bollard signs have been placed along the beachfront to inform beachgoers about the ordinance, and the Park Board beach cleaning crews will collect and discard any umbrellas left overnight.

Hotels, short-term rentals, and anyone hosting visitors, please inform your guests of this ordinance to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Help us keep our beaches clean by properly disposing of litter!

Praying for everyone in Laura’s path-

We're feeling very fortunate this morning that Galveston was spared the destruction of Hurricane Laura.

The City did not sustain wind or storm damage, and water is receding in low-lying areas that experienced street flooding. As of this morning, CenterPoint is not reporting any power outages in Galveston.

The City has lifted the mandatory evacuation and residents who left the island may safely return today. The City will be working with the state on the safe return of residents who evacuated on buses. The curfew order has been lifted, and there will not be a curfew in the city tonight.

Trash services will resume Friday and continue through the weekend to finish this week's runs. Sanitation is mobilizing and will collect Wednesday's route on Friday. Thursday's route will be collected Saturday. Island Transit will resume normal operations Friday. The airport has reopened.

While we feel thankful and lucky this morning, our thoughts are with our neighbors along the upper Texas Coast and Louisiana. The City has reached out to our various partners to see how we may be able to provide help to those affected by Hurricane Laura.

UPDATE: Mandatory evacuations will be ongoing throughout the day and early tomorrow, so people have time to secure their properties, businesses, etc. and leave for safety. Residents are NOT required to be off the island by 12 p.m. City services will be suspended at 12 p.m. People should be getting their plans together this morning for an evacuation.

The state will be staging buses throughout the day at the Island Community Center at 4700 Broadway for those residents who need and have signed up for assistance.

ORIGINAL: City of Galveston Mayor Pro Tem Craig Brown signed a mandatory evacuation Tuesday instructing all Galveston residents to begin leaving the island for safety after overnight models shifted the landfall of Hurricane Laura westward.

Tropical Storm Laura, expected to develop into a hurricane today, is predicted to make landfall late Wednesday to early Thursday as a Category 3 Major Hurricane. The landfall is anticipated near the Texas/Louisiana border, according to the latest National Weather Service models. Overnight the track of the storm moved slightly westward toward Galveston.

Given the uncertainty of the path and the heightened intensity of this storm, as well as the track westward overnight, the City of Galveston is issuing a mandatory evacuation for all residents. The mandatory evacuation was signed at 6 a.m. Tuesday. Galveston residents should secure loose items at their property and leave the island today. It is urgent that residents heed this mandatory evacuation and leave with all family members and pets.

“With the uncertainties of this storm and its increasing strength, we need to take all necessary precautions to protect our residents,” Mayor Pro Tem Craig Brown said. “It’s imperative that you make plans this morning to secure your homes and move you and your family to safety off island.”

City services will be suspended today at 12 p.m. Sanitation will complete its route this morning and those services will be suspended. City staff will secure city facilities and all city buildings will be closed by Tuesday at 12 p.m.

Police and fire will not be available once winds reach Tropical Storm strength. Those who do not follow the evacuation order should not expect public safety services once conditions worsen.

If you are signed up for the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry, the state will begin staging buses at 47th and Broadway at the Island Community Center this morning. If you are in the STEAR program, but do not have a way to get to the community center, please call 409-765-3710 for assistance.

Be prepared!!

Be prepared!!

City of Galveston Mayor Pro Tem Craig Brown has issued a voluntary evacuation for residents living in low-lying areas and west of the end of the Seawall in advance of Tropical Storm Laura, effective 1 p.m. Monday.

There is still a high degree of uncertainty regarding the track and strength of this storm, and residents should be aware changes could occur quickly, necessitating a mandatory evacuation of the island as early as tonight or tomorrow morning depending on developments in the storm.

The latest update from the National Weather Service predicts Tropical Storm Laura will develop into a Category 2 hurricane and track to the upper Texas Coast or southwest Louisiana, making landfall Wednesday night. There is potential for the storm to track closer to Galveston, but there are still many uncertainties. However, it is increasingly apparent that Galveston is likely to feel the effects of the storm, including wind, rain and potential flooding.

Given the potential for storm surge and high winds up to 100 mph, the City of Galveston has determined it is in the best interest of residents to issue a voluntary evacuation of the west end and low-lying areas. We urge our residents living in these areas to make preparations to leave. Higher than normal tides ahead of the storm may make some roads impassable so it is important to act quickly and carefully. Additionally, if you do not live or work in Galveston, we urge you to return to your home. The City is also contacting RV parks to close their premises and have RV guests vacate.

The City of Galveston is working with local nursing homes and assisted living centers to transport their residents to safety. If you have special needs or concerns or you are medically-dependent on power, now is the time to make preparations and find a safe place to stay off the island.

Again, the track of this storm could change quickly and we urge all residents to have a plan in place in case of evacuation. We recommend residents prepare their homes for high winds and secure any loose items on their property. Stay connected and pay attention for local updates as the storm progresses. If residents have questions concerning any aspect of the approaching storm, please call Galveston’s emergency operations center at 409-765-3710.
