As a native New Yorker and one who lives on Long Island right outside of the “Big Apple”, I can tell you I take New York City for granted. Door to door Broadway and 42nd street, with no traffic, is 45 minutes from where I live. And I hardly ever go into “the City”. Once a year to a Broadway play, maybe. I might go and see a NY Knick or NY Ranger game once in a while.

I know I should visit New York City more often, go to a world famous museum, have lunch in Little Italy or Chinatown. But I just don’t.

I suspect it’s the same for all of you who live in Las Vegas. When was the last time you were on “The Strip”? When was the last time you saw a show…..on the Strip? I come out to Vegas five or six times a year and even I don’t stay on the Strip any more. And now you want me to pay for parking when I stay at a strip hotel!!! I don’t think so.

That’s why I was quite pleasantly surprised when I escorted a Brooklyn, New York group to Las Vegas just back in October. We were a group of 125 and we all stayed at the Luxor. I really got the chance, for the first time in a long time to see a Vegas visit from a vacationers point of view. And this group just loved Vegas and all the Strip had to offer. We even took the group to the Grand Canyon and the oohs and aahs we got were wonderful to hear.

Sometimes a staycation is just what is needed. There is just so much to see and do right were you live. Take that ride to the Grand Canyon if you haven’t been there in a while. Closer still is Utah and all the national parks there. I could go on and on about all the offerings but you probably know them better than I do.

When I first started writing articles for the Vegas Voice, and when publisher Dan and myself started the VEGAS VOYAGERS, I tried to come up with a tag line for my monthly articles. As much as I thought and thought about this, the best I could come up with to end my article was, HAPPY DESTINATIONS. And I have used this tag line for over 15 years.

I started to think about these two words. I suppose it’s not a bad sentiment. But what does it mean? Short answer; I don’t know. The word HAPPY is easy enough. I do want everybody to be happy. Many a song has been written about the state of being happy. Happy is a good thing. But the word DESTINATIONS? I guess what I was trying to say in those two words is that I want all the VEGAS VOYAGERS to be happy when they go; when they travel, wherever that journey may take you.

HAPPY DESTINATIONS! It’s not a bad thought. However, I started thinking, is there a better tag line I can start using? And while I was thinking about this new tag line possibility Arizona Senator passed away. What does his passing have to do with a new tag line for my monthly articles? Well, to say the least, Senator McCain lived a very interesting, adventurous full life. The many retrospectives on his life made that very clear.

In fact, in reviewing his own life’s experience, Senator McCain stated, and I’m paraphrasing….
“I’ve had an adventure full life. I wouldn’t change a thing”. His words left me with the impression that, in spite of some very tough times, he loved everything about the life he lived and the adventures he had.

With this in mind, I thought that all of us who are in our senior years, if at all possible, should continue to seek out adventure. It might be “soft” adventure, but seek out adventure nonetheless. And that’s what the VEGAS VOYAGERS are all about. Offering the 55+ community the opportunity to participate in new adventures. To go to new places, you many never have visited. To travel with like minded people and to continue to explore through travel for as long as you are able.

While the tag line HAPPY DESTINATOIONS has served me well, and I will miss it, the better sentiment going forward is HAPPY ADVENTURES. Continue to explore, continue to experience and most of all, I hope for all of you, continue to be HAPPY. HAPP ADVENTURES to all.
