Meet Connie, one of our amazing volunteers. During National Volunteer Month, we celebrate Connie and all the volunteers that donate their time to LICM. Here’s what Connie had to say about volunteering at the Museum:

ā€œVolunteering fills my life. I don’t want to be home! At the Museum, I love talking to parents to cheer them up. Sometimes they look tired, and I know that feeling. I remember what it was like to have young children, and sometimes it’s hard, but it’s worth it. I tell them that, and sometimes I see that I cheered them up.

ā€œBeing here reminds me of when my kids were little. They loved the Bubbles exhibit, the blocks, and the ice cream in TotSpot. My son also loved the train in TotSpot, and when we took our first trip into New York City, my son recalled the train at the Children’s Museum.

ā€œTo me, LICM is a beautiful organization. I love it. The staff and managers are very nice and that’s why I continue to come back. It’s exciting because the Museum is always changing and there is always something new. Seeing the kids come in the morning with big smiles, so excited to walk around the Museum, that makes me happy.ā€

Last month, a team from LICM traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to visit Heartland Scenic Studio, the fabrication company that has been building Saltwater Stories: We Need the Sea and the Sea Needs Me, our new permanent exhibit that celebrates Long Island’s rich maritime history and culture. We have been researching, collecting data, designing, and prototyping components for this exhibit for years, and it was thrilling to see it being constructed.

We invite you to follow along on social media as we show you more behind-the-scenes content over the next few months about the process of creating this exciting new experience for our visitors. Save the date: Saltwater Stories opens October 11, 2025! 🌊

Visitors were eager to meet artist Ian Love yesterday, who held several workshops that explored the techniques and skills he uses to create his art. After learning about the different kinds of wood that Ian uses for his sculptures, children practiced sanding, gouging, and oiling their own works of wooden art.

Check out Ian’s exhibit, Echoes of the Forest, on display at LICM through May 4. Visit https://bit.ly/eoflicm for more information. 🌳

Yesterday, the Museum was filled with wagging tails and smiling faces as we hosted the Mutt-i-grees Family Social, led by our friends from North Shore Animal League America with help from Saint Anthony's High School student volunteers. Using the Mutt-i-greesĀ® Curriculum, which was developed in partnership with Yale University, children and families learned about the rescue process, animal care, and adoption through play and educational engagement. Visitors also had a chance to meet some North Shore Animal League’s adorable rescue pups. Many thanks to News 12 Long Island for stopping by to cover this paw-some event! 🐾

Some students spent part of their school break learning about puppies currently living in local shelters.
