Summer (June – August): Wildlife babies are still arriving and growing bigger. Bear breeding season continues until early July. Bison breeding season (bison rut) July – August. Bull bison bellowing and challenging each other for breeding opportunities. Wolves move around trying to feed hungry pups back at the dens and rendezvous sites. Wildflowers at higher elevations. We visited a bull bison returning to the earth. He took his last breath in December. Now, his bones are being buried by winter's snow. Scavengers have consumed the meat. Rodents will make use of his bones. His fur will be used to make nests in the spring. His life is supporting many others now.

New research! A new article coming out in February shows the effects of human-caused mortality on wolves that live near national parks. These losses are disruptive to pack dynamics and can possibly lead to pack collapse.

“This seminal study confirms what we have been observing in Yellowstone – when pack leaders are killed, the pack disbands. It’s a disruptive dynamic to ecotourism, which relies on pack stability and consistency. More importantly, it devalues what Americans love about their national parks – places where wildlife can exist largely unfettered by human exploitation,” said Dr. Nathan Varley, wildlife biologist and owner of Yellowstone Wolf Tracker.

This study examines 118 years of cumulative data from five national parks and packs that ranged in size from 2 - 37 wolves.

Transboundary movement of wildlife results in some of the most complicated and unresolved wildlife management issues across the globe. Depending on the location and managing agency, gray wolf (Canis ...
