News Release: Local and State Governments Working on Plan with National Park Service to Fully Open the Great Smoky Mountains National Park During Federal Government Shutdown

Sevier County, the cities of Gatlinburg, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Pittman Center, Blount County, Cocke County, the State of Tennessee, the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, the State of North Carolina, along with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, have been working together since last week on a plan to provide financial support to make the Great Smoky Mountains National Park fully operational during the federal government shutdown that began on Wednesday, October 1.

Currently, the National Park remains accessible, including main roadways; however, some services or popular areas such as Sugarlands Visitor Center and Cades Cove Picnic Area and Visitor Center are closed as a result of the federal government shutdown. Local and state governments are working on a plan with the National Park Service to fully open these and other areas of the park that are closed during the shutdown.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the United States and plays a critical role in the economy and culture of the region, especially during the fall season when hundreds of thousands of visitors travel to the area. The partnering governments recognize the importance of keeping the park open and are working together to provide solutions that will minimize any disruption.

The partners are working on finalizing details on an agreement, and additional information regarding operations and funding will be released soon.

Areas of the park that are currently closed can be found on the National Park Website: https://www.nps.gov/grsm/index.htm

🍂 Fall bear safety reminder 🐻

Autumn is here and black bears are more active than ever, foraging for acorns and nuts to prepare for winter. It's not uncommon to see multiple bears in one area during this time. Here's how to stay safe and respectful in bear country:

🔊 If you encounter a bear on a trail:
Never run or turn your back on it, back away slowly.
If it tries to approach you, make yourself big and make loud noises.
If it persists, throw sticks or rocks at the bear and act aggressively. Do not throw food or your backpack at it.

👀 If you see a bear in the distance:
If it notices you but continues feeding or walking, ensure you are at least 50 yards away and safely observe the bear.
If it changes behavior (stops feeding, watches you, changes direction), you’re too close—back away slowly.

🚗 If you see a bear near the road:
Do not stop in the roadway.
Only pull over if there’s a safe, paved pull-off.
Stay in your vehicle—never approach a bear.

🚫 Bear safety guidelines:
Stay at least 50 yards away from bears.
Lock your vehicle.
Never feed any wildlife.

Let’s keep both bears and people safe this fall. Respect wildlife and enjoy the beauty of the season responsibly! 🍁

Rest in peace to an amazing local photographer. I have some of her art in our condo. She was always able to capture the beauty of the Smoky Mountains in every shot. Consider donating to her family’s funeral expenses here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-memory-of-kellie-walls-sharpe

To further support the family, purchase some of her photographs here: https://www.onelaneroadphotography.com

Hi everyone. I'm Kellie's oldest son, Justin:

It's with the heaviest of hearts that we must announce that our Mom, Kellie Walls Sharpe, passed away on April 25th, 2025.

Mom had a knack for finding the beautiful things around her, and her greatest talent, besides being the best mother, wife, and friend anyone could ever imagine, was sharing the beautiful things she saw with the world. Through her photos and her writing, she made the beauty of Appalachia real, to many who have and who haven't visited or lived here.

What many may not know, is that was never the point of this page. Mom told us a long time ago that One Lane Road Photography wasn't necessarily where she wanted to share her photos with the world, but was a gift for her kids; myself, Josh, Jack, and Hannah. It was a way for us to always know that our Mom was seeing beautiful things, even after we were out in the world living our lives, and for one day, when she was no longer here with us, to remember all the grandeur she took in, even in our own backyard.

This page will remain public for as long as Facebook is around, because it's important to all of us that her talent, and her memory, be shared with the world. I would also be remiss if I didn't remind the world that Deb Campbell was her best friend in the world, and this is also a place where you will see the evidence of so many of the wonderful experiences they had together.

At this time there are no plans for services, Mom didn't want one. We are asking, if you feel so led, to make a donation to offset the cost of her final expenses. Mom will be cremated, and her remains will be spread among the Great Smoky Mountains, her favorite place in the world.

We are so fortunate to have been loved by her. She was our guiding light, our friend, and someone who loved us immensely.
