The weights are pretty awesome. Some folks said it got a little breezy and bumpy out there, so these catches were hard work! 🎣🐟🚤

We are inspired! 😎
These talented guests are showing us some perfect ways to spend a hot day in July. They brought the rotisserie, and all the fixings to play in the yard, adult style. Good cooks in the family! 👨🏻🍳
Then, stay cool in the water while waiting for supper time. Smart kiddos. 👏

Sneak peek!
Those creative guys in the campground are putting a float together for the parade tomorrow. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Be sure to see the final showpiece in Gay starting at 2 p.m. I hear that they loaded up lots of candy to toss out to the crowd. “Big” kids are welcome to the sweets as well as the small ones! 😂
Plus, notice the sign. We will have good family fun all afternoon and evening. Bring your people. Bring friends. 😎🥳🤩

I love it when guests pick local flowers!
Angelo rented three houses for his pre-wedding party. Then, the group left these sweet items in the house this morning.
Super nice!

March is still very much “white with snow.” Winter fun will be in full swing for a few more weeks.
However, Spring is on the way. Our neighbor is getting ready for the upcoming change of season. So, make a note. When driving around the Keweenaw to enjoy these sunny days, you will want to stop in the Lodge/Pit Stop during their new hours.

Vacation Fun Now, Commercial Fishing Then
Our grandfather, Charlie Kauppi, and Dad, Willard “Sully” Kauppi operated commercial fishing operations from this gorgeous site on the south shore of Lake Superior. Now we, Bob and Sherry, brother and sister, are turning it into a center for rest, recreation and pure fun.
ATV trails and snowmobile trails run right through the wooded acres of our property. We have lots of room to park trailers. We over 1200 feet of lake shore and we have 100’s of feet of docks for anglers to cast, boaters to tie up, or to launch. We even have a classic yacht of our own tied up to the dock and available for folks to sign up as a vacation rental. We are a hop and a skip from the To***co River. Nature abounds here. Deer roam. Eagles soar. Even wild turkeys strut in and out of the woods.
We are close to all the popular attractions, thanks to our unique location, half way up the south shore of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Mt. Bohemia, a mecca for downhill skiers, is about 25 minutes up the shore to Lac LaBelle. Mount Ripley is just 25 minutes in the other direction. Tourist centers like Copper Harbor, Fort Wilkins State Park and the breathtaking Brockway Mountain Drive are about 45 minutes from the driveway of our vacation house. In Copper Harbor you can shop for souvenirs, visit museums, or get active when you rent kayaks and/or fat tire bicycles to experience the best of the water life and the rough terrain in the woods. The Deleware Mine is a great stop on US 41 just 10 miles from Copper Harbor. Museum grade displays there will capture your imagination like not other. Super helpful assistants are ready to talk you through so many ideas for fun at the Visitor Centers in Copper Harbor, Calumet and Houghton.
About 20 minutes drive to US 41 you’ll find Calumet, Michigan, a leader during the copper mining boom. It showcases its significant history with the Keweenaw National Park, the original Calumet Theater and many art galleries. Drive less than half an hour from our place to Hancock, Michigan, and tour a genuine copper mine at the Quincy Mine, which includes a thrilling tram ride. Across the lift bridge you’ll find shops in Houghton, Michigan. Michigan Technological University is a gem, with world class shows at their theater, the Rozsa Center.
Day trips are easy. Enjoy awesome vistas everywhere you turn. Stop at the Adventure Mine in Greenland, Michigan. Take a scenic ride to the Porcupine Mountains and see the Lake of the Clouds. Closer to home, we are only one mile from the Gay Bar, in Gay, Michigan, where the menu is full of yummy options. My favorite is the Chicago Dog.
Coming back to Dockside to settle in for the evening, you’ll find our resort is all about comfort, not just adventure. The vacation home has a rich history of its own. It began as military housing in the early 1950’s. The US Air Force had a radar base near Gratiot Lake during the cold war era. After closing in 1988, it was repurposed a few times, and then turned over to Keweenaw County. They auctioned houses off. We moved 7 houses from the former air base to our location on the Lake Superior shore, with plans to give them a brand new future. Renovating them is up-cycling at its best. In the middle of all the rustic beauty around you, you can rest in luxury, in a 3 bedroom home with a massive walk-in shower, a stainless steel kitchen and stunning 8 foot wide picture windows. There is an enormous deck across the entire front of the house. A fire pit sits on the side of the house, for when you are ready to roast marshmallows, watch the sun set and see the stars come out.
Our campground also overlooks the big Lake. Camp sites range from full hook ups to rustic sites for those who love a good old fashioned night in a tent. We have cool stuff, like a tiki bar by the dock for hanging out day or night. Plus there is a stage for live music. We have a pontoon barge tied in the marina for sunning, having lunch, or taking a swim. We host picnics and parties of our own, including a fishing tournament on the first weekend in August every year. We have a great picnic on the 4th of July. Local fire department volunteers touch off fireworks at the end of our dock that are worth staying up late for! We love to accommodate weddings, reunions, club outings, and gatherings for any reason at all. We can arrange for fireworks for those events as well.
Stop by any time to tour the place and the projects. Swim. Fish. Explore.
