Summer is almost here!🥵
With temperatures rising this week we would like to take a moment to talk about our company’s HEAT policy and temperature related shutdowns🔥
These are policies that we have pioneered to establish in Gettysburg- working closely with our team of veterinarians and NPS- for the well being of all equines in or around Gettysburg National Military Park.
🔥All carriage and horseback operations shut down at 93 degrees, and we will contact guests to rebook for cooler weather.
🔥Limited time to visit? We recommend booking the first tours of the day before the temperatures climb and potentially cancel operations for that day.
🔥 When temperatures reach 85 degrees, our staff is well trained to automatically jump into our protocol of monitoring each horses condition by a strict set of vital sign assessments- performed before, during, and after each tour.
🔥Assessments are logged, shared with management, and appropriate steps are taken to cool down or replace horses if they are showing any signs of heat related distress.
🔥 A sweaty horse is a good sign! Just like humans- sweating actually helps cool the horses down and is indicative of the horse properly regulating their own temperature.
🔥As always- all of our horses are offered plenty of cool water at many times during their work day, as well as ample time to rest between tours.
We love our horses like family and will always put their safety and wellbeing above all else💕🐴
We also believe in full transparency for you- the visitors, the locals, the horse lovers, etc! So if you ever have any questions about our heat policies or how we manage horse conditions- feel free to ask a staff member! I will put our training standard in the comments in case anyone is interested.
Thank you, have a happy & hydrated summer!🌞
