Gettysburg National Military Park has issued guidance to it's partners throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Current guidance on Gettysburg National Military Park-wide mask/social distancing regulations: Issued February 2, 2021 , Ref: Executive Or
der No 13991: Protecting the Federal Workforce and Requiring Mask-Wearing:
"Public health includes the health of our park visitors. The Superintendent's Compendium, consisting of GNMP specific rules and regulations, has been updated to include the implementation and enforcement of mask-wearing requirements for visitors in federal buildings and on federal lands including those assigned to partner businesses within GNMP"
General Requirements for Mask Wearing
~All individuals over the age of two years must wear masks in indoor common areas and shared workspaces and in outdoor areas where physical distancing cannot be reasonably maintained.
~This includes NPS partners, employees, contractors, volunteers, and visitors.
~Masks must cover the nose and mouth, and meet CDC and OSHA guidance.
~The NPS will not allow novelty/non-protective masks, masks with ventilation valves, face shields as a substitute for masks, or masks with messages or graphics that the NPS prohibits.
~Additionally, masks are not a substitute for physical distancing; even masked partner staff should maintain physical distancing from their colleagues and the public.
~Masks must be worn indoors in common areas and shared workspaces in federal buildings including
facilities used by partners (e.g., public areas such as lodge lobbies and hallways, ticket offices, visitor information desks, theaters, and retail stores) as well as employee areas such as shared offices, kitchens, maintenance buildings, and warehouses.
~There are exceptional circumstances under which a mask may not be required indoors, such as when an individual is alone in a room with floor to ceiling walls and a closed door, when in private areas of partner housing units, or when actively eating or drinking in a restaurant or employee dining room while maintaining physical distance in accordance with CDC guidelines.
~Masks are also required in outdoor areas on federal property where physical distancing cannot reasonably be maintained. For example, a mask may not be required for the entire hike on a trail or on a lodge walkway but must be used when passing others on the trail or the walkway.
~A mask must also be used at times when physical distancing cannot be maintained in a guided group.
~Partners providing services to visitors must require visitors to follow the requirements for mask wearing outlined above.

A little bit about the family business…
Woman owned, family operated small business
Confederate Trails was founded and opened for business in 2010. Owner, Rachel Stephens, and her husband Doug have a strong bond to Gettysburg National Military Park. For one, they are both prior Army, and secondly their wedding anniversary is on July 3rd (for those of you not familiar, the Gettysburg Battle was July 1st, 2nd and 3rd 1863). Prior to starting the horseback riding business they would often come to the Battlefield on their anniversary to enjoy the history with their children. Rachel continues to serve in the Air-force as a flight nurse and was just recently promoted to Lt. Col. She was deployed overseas serving with the US Air-Force under Operation Freedom Sentinel.
Dream becomes reality
Doug, a military veteran, upon returning from his sixth deployment spoke with Rachel about wanting to change their focus to doing something that they loved for the rest of their lives. The Stephens family had often spent their free time trail riding and visiting the Gettysburg Battlefield, soon after Confederate Trails was born.
A family operation
While you are out at the trails, don’t be surprised if you see the Stephens’ children.
Katie When you arrive for your ride, do you hear a familiar, friendly voice? That would be Katie, the oldest child and only daughter. Katie is an energetic dynamo who is on the trail almost daily. Katie loves the horses and knows all of their personalities. She is great at matching horses with guests, ensuring you have a great experience. You want amazing? Katie’s it.
Zachary Zachary, the oldest son, does a great job both at the barn and on the trail. He enjoys welcoming guests and keeping things running smoothly. In his spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing, and riding his motorcycle. Zach is proud to have achieved rank of Eagle Scout.
Spencer Spencer, the youngest, lends a hand when he is not playing football for his High School team.
The Military Connection to Gettysburg
Confederate Trails is a caring, family business that functions with the expertise that comes from a combined military experience of over 40 years. Doug & Rachel met when they were both medics and non-commissioned officers in the Army. Doug worked in the air (Huey helicopters) and Rachel worked on the ground (HUMV ambulances). Later they changed branch of service to the Air Force. Both have achieved flight status and Rachel has long since been commissioned as a Registered Nurse.
Rachel – Mom. Wife. Boss Mare. Owner. Operator. Nurse. Lt. Col.
Caring for PeopleDuring the off season, Rachel continues to work as a Registered Nurse. She has more than 17 years of experience and has a particular love for the elderly. Rachel did many years in long-term care working as everything from a floor nurse to nursing supervisor to Director of Nursing. Rachel credits her strong bond with the elderly to her close relationship with her grandmother. “My Gram is amazing!” Rachel states, “If I could be half the person she is, I would be happy!” Rachel’s grandmother, Francis, turns 102 this year!
