YOOPER COOPER!
We recently checked off another Mitten State must, a trip to the Upper Peninsula (the U-P). Folks who live up there (and there aren't many) are called Yooper's, and residents of lower Peninsula are called trolls (they live under the bridge-the Mighty Mac that links the two).
We started in the SOO (Sault Ste. Marie) and watched a freighter transfer through the locks between Lake Huron and Lake Superior. And speaking of Lake Superior, it is absolutely named correctly. It's absolutely beautiful; clear blue water, ocean-like waves, and no salt (Cooper thought it tasted just fine)!
We then moved on to Whitefish Point, a narrows that approaches the SOO, and where the Edmund Fitzgerald met its demise (go listen to the song if you have a few hours to kill). A boat tour of Pictured Rocks was the only part of the trip that didn't involve labradors. Lake Michigan has sand dunes, Lake Superior has breathtaking sandstone bluffs.
We continued to the Keweenah Peninsula to the lovely town of Copper Harbor. This area boomed with copper mining and many of the small towns look like the mining towns of NE PA (but it snows A LOT more in MI). We finished in Marquette to give Cooper one last chance to play in Lake Superior.
Fall is definitely approaching here in MI. We hope you enjoy the upcoming season. We have six more weeks here, and we'll keep posting Cooper's adventures. Thanks for following!
