In Nacogdoches, history isn't behind glass — it's underfoot. The oldest town in Texas traces its roots to Spanish missions established in 1716, and its downtown covers more than three centuries of Texas history in just a few blocks: the Stone Fort Museum, where Texas revolutionaries once gathered; Oak Grove Cemetery, where four signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence rest; the Zion Hill Historic Site; and the 1911 Nacogdoches Railroad Depot that helped put the town on the map.

But the past is only half the story. As the Garden Capital of Texas, Nacogdoches is also home to the state's largest azalea garden, the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University, along with the Gayla Mize Garden and the towering pines that define East Texas. History in the morning, gardens in the afternoon — Nacogdoches makes it easy to see why travelers have been stopping here since before Texas was Texas.
