From the Tonopah Times-Bonanza and Goldfield News, Friday, September 1st, 1967.
The course was 40 miles long and the race was held over three days. Wranglers had to lead burros that had been captured in the wild. The 1967 race was won by Don Cousins with an elapsed time of 7 hours, 30 minutes, and 34 seconds.
This was a fun-serious race with no less than 22 rules. Rule 6 was interesting:
“Prior to the start of the first day of the race, wranglers shall pick up their burros (by number) as they are brought from the holding pens and shall be responsible for delivering them saddled and ready to go to the starting line. There are two distinct sets of numbers used during the race and there is no correlation between the two, the numbers worn by the wranglers to assist the timekeepers, and the numbers worn by the burros used in the drawing. Wranglers who don’t know their a$$ may report this sorry state of affairs to an official and will be advised of their burro’s number.”
