If you’re planning a trip to Omaha, there’s so much more to do than you might expect—especially if you’re visiting the world-famous Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium!

We recently enjoyed a quick weekend getaway to the area and found some great family-friendly spots and local favorites worth adding to your itinerary.

🏨 Where we stayed
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Omaha - Millard Area was a fantastic home base—clean rooms, friendly and very accommodating staff, and a convenient location near shopping and great dining options. The hotel also had a wonderful fire pit area that was perfect for relaxing in the evenings, plus a nice pool area for unwinding after busy days of exploring.

🍕 Local eats we loved

Big Fred's Pizza Garden — classic, hearty pizza and a true local favorite
Buffalo Wings & Rings — perfect for a casual meal with plenty of flavor
Ted & Wally’s Ultra-Premium Homemade Ice Cream — absolutely worth the stop for unique, creamy flavors
Runza — we had to try the famous Runza and it did not disappoint!

🎟️ Family fun & activities

Omaha Children's Museum — interactive, hands-on, and 100% worth the visit for families
We also checked out Diventures — a great local spot if you’re interested in scuba, swimming, or aquatic gear

✨ Omaha is such an underrated destination with a perfect mix of adventure, family fun, and amazing local food. Even for a quick weekend getaway, it packed in so many great experiences!

If you’re looking for a great hotel option in the Port Canaveral area, I highly recommend the Hampton Inn & Suites on Astronaut Boulevard.

The staff here was incredibly accommodating and welcoming, especially when handling a large group. Check-in was quick, smooth, and very well organized, making the arrival experience stress-free.

The hotel itself was very clean and well maintained throughout. One of the standout features is the beautiful pool area with plenty of comfortable lounge seating—perfect for relaxing before or after travel. The tiki bar is another highlight, offering great drinks and really good food in a fun, vacation-style atmosphere.

Overall, this is a solid choice if you’re cruising out of Port Canaveral or just staying in the area. Clean property, friendly staff, and great amenities make it an easy recommendation.
