A road that tells some incredible stories...the same road you can take today to make some memories.

Ever driven a road that was carved into cliff faces by hand?

Rim Rock Drive in Colorado National Monument is a 23-mile scenic route that hugs the canyon rim—complete with sheer drop-offs, rock tunnels, and views that make you slow down (in the best way). What many visitors don’t realize: much of this “daring roadway” was built during the Great Depression by WPA and CCC crews, working along the natural rim line with far less machinery than you’d expect. The final pieces weren’t finished until 1950.

Today, you can still feel that history in the details:
• Three sandstone tunnels bored through the rock to keep the road close to the rim
• Overlooks that reveal layers of geologic time—from ancient canyon-bottom formations to younger rim sandstones
• Iconic viewpoints like Independence Monument and the Coke Ovens
• A drive that’s best enjoyed slowly—anywhere from about 45 minutes to a couple of hours with stops

Pro tip for planning: conditions can change, and Rim Rock Drive is occasionally closed for snow, ice, or rockfall—so it’s worth checking before you go.
