I never had any intention of living in Michigan again…

I was sitting in the waiting room at my yearly cardiologist appointment, lost in thought and missing my daughter who had died less than a year ago because of domestic violence. In that moment, I hated Alabama. I didn’t want to live here anymore. I kept thinking we should have never moved here and she would still be alive.

But…Alabama was her home. She was born and lived her entire short life here. This is the place where all of our memories are with her; raising farm animals, homeschooling, trips to the ocean….

In front of me, in that waiting room, was a painting of a small lake and some birch trees. It was only mass produced artwork, but it felt like if I could just take a step inside of that scene I would feel ok for a little while.

That painting led us back to Michigan. I found a house for sale with a pond and birch trees. It was like walking into a fairytale.

We aren’t leaving Alabama. But we are also coming home to Michigan. Two homes, one heart, and a daughter we will love from afar.
