In 338 BC, after his victory at the Battle of Chaironeia, Philip II of Macedon began constructing the Philippeion at Olympia, the only circular building inside the Altis, the sacred heart of the sanctuary. He died in 336 BC before it was finished, and his son, Alexander the Great, completed what his father started.

Inside once stood 5 statues of gold and ivory, carved by the renowned sculptor Leochares.
