Ever wonder how a massive granite block is separated from the quarry wall? In this video, we use specialized polymer air bags that are carefully inserted into a cut in the granite and slowly inflated with compressed air. As the bags expand, they generate an incredible amount of evenly distributed force, ranging from 20 to more than 200 tons depending on the size of the bag.
The gradual increase in pressure allows the force to build until the granite block breaks free from the quarry wall and tips over in a controlled manner.

Now, can you guess what this block weighs? 🤔

All across the country, monuments are rising each year to honor the brave service people who have fought for our country and more often than not, those memorials are built using American stone.

Tom Koch, owner of Stone Art Memorial Company in Buffalo, has had a lot of experience during his 45 years in the industry helping civic and veterans groups design and build memorials. “I’ve got a book full of civic monuments and always have a few in the works — both large and small — each year.”
