The Llano Bug is a favorite fly pattern for the Texas Hill Country. However, it catches fish beyond just Central Texas. It is a favorite of mine for catching Bass and Sunfish in North Texas.

A yellow topwater fly that imitates both a Grasshopper or small Frog.

Hop and Sting Brewing Co. located in Grapevine TX, is a DFW award winning brewery that has a monthly tying night the second Wednesday of the month.

Come out tomorrow Wednesday June 10th at 6:30pm as I will be teaching the Llano Bug.

Nathan started fly fishing 6 months ago. Bass and Sunfish are the most common fish we catch in North TX on the fly. Occasionally an unexpected catch occurs.

This catfish not only hit the fly with determination, once hooked it took off up river not wanting to stop.

Nathan said that was the most
fun catch thus far with the fly rod.

Big or small it’s the feeling that matters!

Larry flew to Texas to spend time on the water with his son Garrett. Neither one of them had ever fly fished before. Larry had never fished before.

Larry is now hooked considering he caught his first fish ever! Not only did Larry learn how to cast, he had to learn what it was like to have a fish strike the fly.

He said he will be back!

Scott enjoys spending time in the outdoors. This adventure took him on a jet boat ride up the Brazos River.

He has never caught Sand Bass on the fly until this trip back in March.

He said at the end of the trip, put me down for this exact day in March 2027.

You’re on my calendar for next year Scott!

Aric thought he had his hands full on that Gar! That is until he set the hook on this 6lb Carp.

The strong runs had him wanting to know what he set his fly into. Aric never thought a freshwater fish could give him such a work out.

In summary White Bass, Bluegills, Spotted Bass, Gar and this Carp made for a multi species day back in March.

Get out there and cast a fly, you never know what’s going to eat next.

Aric had his hands full on this 28” Gar considering it’s his second time fly fishing! That day it was one fly pattern with 5 different species eating the exact same pattern.

You never know what’s on the end of your line.

I miss the 9 years I spent leading the weekly fly tying class while working for Sportsman's Finest down in Austin, TX.

The owner of a DFW award winning Brewery -> Hop and Sting Brewing Co. located in Grapevine, TX is a fly fisherman.

They have a monthly tying night the second Wednesday of the month.

Come out tonight Wednesday April 8th at 6:30pm as I will be teaching a minnow pattern that catches any minnow eating fish in Texas.

If you can’t make tonight’s event, I will be back in June for another fly pattern tying night.

Marc and his son Aric have fished with me on walk and wade trips in the past. Their first time running the river in my Hog Island boat.

They caught 5 different species that day. Two of which deserve a second & third post. Keep an eye open for a continuation of fish species on their first Sand Bass run in March.
