Signs of the Hi-Line... 🛑🚗🪧

Take a drive along Highway 2 and follow the quirky, colorful signs that dot the landscape. They’re more than roadside curiosities, they’re invitations to explore what’s just beyond the pavement! Heading west from Havre, here are a few to see:

📍 Rudyard: Pull off at the Depot Museum to see real dinosaur fossils, but watch out for the Sore Head!

📍Joplin: As the sign says, it's the “Biggest Little Town on Earth.” Stop in and grab lunch at the Bar & Grill to see why locals love it.

📍 Chester: Stretch your legs in the scenic Sweetgrass Hills to the north.

📍 Galata: The motel sign here is a Hi-Line classic. Stay the night at the unique Galata Motel to complete your adventure.

Step inside Fort Benton’s oldest church and you’re stepping back to 1881. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church has stood through gunfights, steamboat days, and the arrival of the railroad! Gothic Revival stained glass still glow with the same light that greeted Montana Territory settlers...

📍Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, St. Paul’s is a living landmark operating continuously since August 1881. Come see the rose window, hear the echoes of the past, and experience the “first sign of a civilized society” in Fort Benton.

It’s quiet now, but next weekend the Cascade PRO rodeo grounds will in full swing! Take part in the fun Friday, Saturday and Sunday August 8th-10th! Activies will include all of the classic rodeo events along with live music, food and dancing! Come join in on the fun! 🤠

A slot canyon, a waterfall... and a bunch of cows?

Muddy Creek Falls is a 5-mile roundtrip hike near Bynum, and it’s full of surprises. You’ll start on flat prairie in the Blackleaf Wildlife Management Area, where summer cows eye you with lazy curiosity. As you follow the creek, the canyon slowly narrows, until you’re deep in a slot and face-to-face with a hidden waterfall. Go give it a visit before the cows are gone for the summer!

Monarch Rocks! And I mean that literally: it’s the name of Monarch, Montana’s annual summer festival!

Join on August 9th from 10 AM–4 PM for a day filled with food, live music, tours of the beautifully restored Monarch Train Depot, and unique handmade goods.

Travelling the Hi-Line anytime soon? Stop in Rudyard (between Shelby and Havre) and grab a treat at the Sugar Shack!

The building has bopped around a couple times, but it now operates right on Hwy 2 throughout the summer. Try one of their specialty shakes (the s'mores was amazing when I was there) and enjoy this piece of Americana!

P.S. The photo says Chester, MT — that’s the Sugar Shack’s old home! The contact info is outdated, but the history behind it is still pretty cool.
