🌸 Did You Know? Lady's Slippers Are More Than Just Beautiful! 🌸

One of Maine's most iconic wildflowers, the pink lady's slipper, is actually a species of wild orchid. These delicate flowers can take years to mature and bloom, making every sighting a special one.

What many people don't realize is that lady's slippers are incredibly sensitive. They rely on a specific soil fungus to help their seeds germinate and grow. Because of this unique relationship, digging up or transplanting a wild lady's slipper almost always results in the plant's death.

If you're lucky enough to spot one while exploring the woods, the best way to enjoy it is to leave it right where it is and snap a photo instead. By respecting these remarkable flowers, we can help ensure they'll continue to bloom for generations to come.

Have you spotted any lady's slippers this spring? Share your photos in the comments! 🌿📸

This sweet cow moose was a little shy at first because of her not-so-beautiful spring attire, but before long she found the confidence to step out where we could admire her. 🫎

This time of year, moose are molting — shedding their thick winter coats to make way for a sleek, shiny summer coat. It may look a little rough right now, but it won’t be long before they’re looking beautiful again!

One more amazing reminder that nature is always changing here in the Moosehead region.

🫎 Moose Fact of the Week 🫎

Cow moose usually give birth in late May through early June here in Maine.

Most cows give birth to 1–2 calves after an 8-month pregnancy. Twins are actually pretty common when food conditions are good.

Newborn calves can weigh 25–35 pounds at birth and are on their feet within hours following mom through the Maine wilderness. This is an important learning time for calves as they stay close to their mothers to learn feeding habits, movement, and survival skills.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Their courage and selflessness have given us the freedoms we enjoy every day. We are forever grateful to those who served and never came home, and we hold their families close in our thoughts today.

As we spend time with loved ones, may we never forget the true meaning of Memorial Day.

❤️🤍💙 Thank you to our fallen heroes. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

We’ve been gearing up for the upcoming guiding season, which officially kicks off this Memorial Weekend!

In the meantime, we’ve had to “test” the waters ourselves… you know, just making sure the gear is working properly 😉🎣

During one of those “tests,” Chris landed a beautiful 22” Moosehead Brook Trout! The best part? He’s still out there waiting for someone else to catch him.

Book your trip and come make some memories on Moosehead Lake this season! 🐟🔥

🌸 To All the Moms 🌸

Mothers are the early mornings, the comforting hugs, the steady encouragement, and the quiet strength behind so many of life’s greatest memories.

Here around Moosehead, spring reminds us a lot of motherhood. Cow moose are preparing to raise new calves, loon pairs are nesting along the shoreline, and the woods are full of new life and fresh beginnings. Nature has a beautiful way of showing us the same care, protection, and love that moms give every single day.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate all mothers, grandmothers, stepmoms, foster moms, and mother figures who make life’s adventures more meaningful.

Thank you for the memories you create, the lessons you teach, and the love you give so freely.

Happy Mother’s Day from Young’s Guide Service. 💐🫎
