Had a little fun with this picture! 🍂

The original photo was a bit grainy from taking it with my cell phone, and I may have pushed the zoom a little further than the camera liked. But it captured such a neat moment that I decided to play around with turning it into a painting.

I have to say, I kind of like how “Autumn’s Glory” turned out! 🎨🫎

Sometimes it’s fun to look at a picture a little differently and see what you can create. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

📢 MDIFW MEETING NEWS — WE WERE HEARD! 🎉🫎

Thank you to everyone who wrote letters, made calls, attended meetings, and shared comments during meetings and at the working group sessions to voice opposition to opening all of zones 8, 9, 14, and 17 to an additional week of September moose hunting.

The compromise to open only part of Zone 8 recognizes that different communities and zones have different needs, concerns, and economic considerations.

👏 A HUGE THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who took the time to participate and make their voices heard! Your involvement helped ensure that these concerns were part of the discussion.

This is why public participation matters. Staying informed, speaking up, and working together can make a difference in decisions that affect Maine’s moose and the communities that depend on them.

Just a reminder about today’s IF&W meeting today, October 20th at 9:30am.

Upcoming MDIFW Meeting Information!

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Advisory Council will be meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 9:30 am in Augusta, and moose season and management areas are on the agenda.

This meeting is particularly important as we look to learn more about the next steps toward adding a September moose hunt in Wildlife Management Districts (WMDs) 8, 9, 14, and 17. This is an opportunity to stay informed about the process and better understand what lies ahead.

We would love to see Maine Moose Coalition members attend this meeting in person or participate virtually through Microsoft Teams. Having members engaged and informed about the decisions affecting Maine’s moose population is an important part of our mission.

🫎🍂 FUN MOOSE FACTS!
As the temperatures begin to drop here in the Moosehead region, this cow is doing what moose do best…feeding on nature’s buffet!

A moose’s diet changes with the seasons. During the warmer months, aquatic plants and leafy vegetation are favorites. As winter approaches, their menu shifts toward twigs, buds, and woody browse.

All that eating helps these incredible animals maintain the body reserves they need to face Maine’s long, cold winters. 🌲

🪶 Did you know? Mallards are highly adaptable. Some migrate thousands of miles, while others remain right here in Maine throughout the winter!

As we enjoy the changing seasons here at Moosehead, keep an eye on the water. You never know when you might spot a few mallards stopping to rest and refuel on their journey south. 🍁 🦆

🍂 That’s a Wrap on the 2026 Guiding Season! 🍂

As our Guiding season comes to an end, we want to thank everyone who included Young’s Guide Service in their visit to the Moosehead Lake region this year! ❤️

From unforgettable moose encounters and great fishing to beautiful days on the water, this season gave us so many memories we’ll carry with us throughout the winter and for years to come.

A big thank-you to everyone who has followed us here on Facebook and Instagram! Our online community has grown by leaps and bounds, and we’re grateful to have you along for the adventure.

While the guiding season may be over, the memories and adventures continue! We’ll be sharing glimpses of what we’re up to this fall and winter, along with flashbacks to some of our favorite moments. 🍁❄️

🫎 Let’s Talk About Antlers! 🫎

Did you know moose antlers are among the fastest-growing tissues in the animal kingdom? During peak growth, they can grow up to an inch per day! A full rack can weigh more than 40 pounds and stretch nearly 6 feet across. That’s one impressive set of antlers! Those massive antlers may do more than make a bull moose look impressive! Research by George and Peter Bubenik suggests that broad, palm-shaped antlers can act as acoustic reflectors, helping direct sound toward a moose’s ears.

🌿 Growing and Shedding
Bull moose shed their antlers every winter, conserving energy during the colder months. Come spring, they begin growing a brand-new set, covered in a soft, fuzzy layer called *velvet* that supplies nutrients as the antlers develop.

👂 Nature’s Sound Collectors
- Sound reflectors: The broad surfaces of antlers can reflect incoming sound waves toward the ears.
- Improved sensitivity: Research has suggested that antlers may improve sound detection by as much as 19% when a bull is positioned sideways to a sound source.
- A mating-season advantage: During the autumn rut, better sound detection may help bulls locate calling females and detect competing males.
